“Oh what a night, late December back in ‘63. What a very special time for me, as I remember, what a night!” Does that sound like a song you know? That is December 1963 (Oh, What a night) by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. If you liked that song, then you must like other songs by them like, “Working My Way Back to You,” “Sherry Baby” and much more. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ music has become very popular this year. It is popping up more and more and is actually appearing on Broadway. Can’t make it to Broadway? You can hear all these songs matched with great chorography right here, in little old Hugo during the spring show choir concert. Carla Rabon’s class is preparing to put on their show, entitled “Oh What a Night.” They have been working on this show since spring break ended and are extremely excited to perform for everyone. The boys in the class had to break out of their comfort zone and sing in ways they haven’t ever before. A lot of the songs require the boys to sing in high falsetto notes. So, that is a challenge all in its own. The chorography is a whole other story. The show choir class has been watching the chorography from the show Glee. They have incorporated a lot of the dance steps from the show into their own performance. Some of the soloists are Kristie Lopez, Paul Wilson and Justin Davis. Show choir is getting help from the art class lead by Kelsi Kiper, Hugo High art teacher. The class is helping build the set. They are making a unique curtain out of old ‘45 records purchased from Willie Carrey, school janitor. This will be show choir’s final show of the year, please come out and support them. The performance will be 7 p.m. April 19 at the Hugo High School gym. Tickets will be on sale at the door, adults are $4 and students are $2. |

After a long and hard season, our baseball games are winding down as we try to perfect our game as much as we can. Districts are only a couple of weeks away, our most likely opponent will be the Valliant Bulldogs or the Antlers Bearcats. Out of two games with the Bulldogs we have split, but we have never played the Bearcats. This season might not have been the best, according to our record, but we are still playing hard and we know we can have a good post season. Out of all the games we played this season the only team we have lost to, considering a few games, was ourselves. Errors have killed us game after game and are without a doubt our biggest problem, but lately the errors have been reduced. This is exactly what you want to see at the end of a season. Our baseball team has high hopes for the remaining season and post play. Come out and support us! |

Over Easter weekend in the high school, there was an upsetting accident. A boiler pipe burst and flooded the boiler room, office, closets and two classrooms. Luckily, we didn’t suffer anything but carpet damage. We also have an increasing amount of roof leaks. All around our school we are suffering roof damage. In multiple classrooms some parts of the ceiling are sinking down, wet or are removed because of water damage. This week, Durant School District passed two bond issues to help build or repair structures and another one to update technology and security on their campuses. I know we are not as big as Durant, but we have some serious concerns to address. Hugo students deserve safe, dry classrooms. Remember this picture and information when a bond issue comes to a vote. |

Beautiful dresses, nice hair, colorful nails. Yes, it’s time for prom. Girls are out searching for the right dress and boys are trying to find the sharpest tuxedoes. Both looking for the “one” to take to prom. These are the normal things that run through teens’ minds as prom gets closer. Prom is an important and magical night in a teen’s life, but if they are not careful, it may also be the most dangerous. Did you know that about 40 percent of all teen deaths in car accidents are alcohol-related? That is a scary truth. Did you also know that number almost doubles on prom night! I know that it is hard to keep your teens safe. Teens have a mind of their own. Whether you’re a parent or just a friend, it is your job to watch out for them. Parents, talk to your kids. Find out who they are going to be with, where they are going to be and you need to tell them what time to be home. Explain to them what danger signs to look for. Check with their friend’s parents to make sure both teens plans are adding up. Tell them to call you every hour or so. Be sure to tell them not to drink. It’s safer for them to call you if there’s a problem. Teens, use your head. I understand that it is your prom night and you want to have fun. if you are doing something that you aren’t suppose to be doing, be smart about it. Nobody can stop you from doing anything but you. If you are going to a party, be sure go with a group of friends that you trust. What happens on prom night can affect your whole life. Be smart and be safe! |

With summertime approaching, it’s time to get dressed for the weather. Time for tanks, shorts, shades and the one summertime shoe that’s easy for you to slip into when it’s time to go to the beach. I’m talking about flip-flops. They come in every color and you can buy them by the dozen because of their cheap price. They also let your feet breathe and keep them cool. Is cheap and easy always good though? How many times have you walked into the mall looking as cute as can be and embarassed yourself by tripping over the front of your flip-flops, hoping that the hottie in the food court didn’t see you? I’ve had my share of times. Not only is it embarrasing but it is also very dangerous. It is said that a flip-flop alters the way one walks and they can cause serious sole, heel and ankle problems. They can lead to joint pains, shin splits and it strains the achilles tendon and pain can develop after two weeks. The thongs make the feet more prone to injury and infections for people with sensitive skin or circulatory conditions such as diabetes. Flip-flops are made out of a foam rubber that can stick or get caught to the ground underneath it, and they are made for walking on the beach, not for everyday use. Many people will say “It’s only a flip-flop.” That is true, but it’s not only a flip-flop when a person falls down the stairs and sprains an ankle. It is very likely that if you’ve ever worn flip-flops then you’ve tripped or stumbled. Many of those trips and stumbles could’ve been far worse. Many flip-flop accidents can be avoided by taking certain safety procedures like not running and watching your step. Wearing a sandal with a strap on the back of the heel gives the ankle more support. This way you can have a safe and enjoyable summer.
