Dress code item No. 8 of page 7 in the Hugo Schools Handbook involves holes in clothing. Mrs. Golden, the Hugo High School principal, has noticed holes in some students’ pants, shorts or jeans.
All of our teachers are armed with a large role of duct tape ready to patch up any student with the “fashionable” pants with holes. She asks that all students please patch the outside of their own pants before coming to school.

In the Hugo city limits there are a number of dogs running around unsupervised. There are complaints from other dog owners due to the increasing number of unattended dogs; it is making it very difficult for people to walk their dogs.
Some of the dogs chase and threaten children as they are walking home from school. Some chase vehicles down the road, and others rummage through neighbors’ trash scattering it all over. The elderly enjoy walking their dogs down the city streets, but fear walking due to other loose dogs. These are just a few complaints from the citizens.
All citizens are entitled to keep and enjoy their animals if they exercise responsibility so that their animals do not unreasonably impinge upon the activities of other persons. Therefore pet owners, please be responsible for your dogs to ensure the safety of others and the right for others to walk their dogs and get exercise. We know you love your dogs, but they may be impounded.

Zero level courses help students transition into college ... for a price PDF Print E-mail

Would you take a class that didn’t give you any credit? Well, zero level courses are just that. Some students that transition from high school to college have a rough time with the subject matter. Some enter college courses with a lack of knowledge, which ends in a failure of the course. Zero level courses are used for helping students gain the knowledge necessary for normal level college courses, but at the cost of no credit.
Zero level courses cost money but don’t offer any credit. They are only there to help students gain the necessary knowledge for higher education. Some colleges hold entrance exams for all new students. This exam not only tests students for entrance into college but also to evaluate their skill levels. If students don’t meet the necessary requirements for any of the core subjects, they must take zero level courses before moving on. Colleges that don’t require an entrance exam still offer zero level classes for those that need the help.
So instead of waiting to enter college and wasting money on courses with no credit, maybe you should pay more attention in class now. High school classes offer remedial courses and they’re free, but whether remedial or not, you should always pay attention and try your best in school. Sure, right now it might be all fun and games, but in the future it could hurt you and your wallet.

Have you ever spent the whole day experimenting and creating new recipes in the kitchen?
If so, maybe a cooking career is for you. There are many culinary schools and institutes across the United States where you can apply for admission. Some people think that a culinary education can only lead to a job as chef. A degree from a culinary school trains you for a variety of careers, including restaurant management, hotel management, pastry chef and many other positions.
Some local culinary programs are at the Kiamichi Technology Center in Idabel, Oklahoma State University in Okmulgee, Southern Oklahoma Technology Center in Ardmore, Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, and Carl Albert State College in Poteau. Tuition costs for a culinary school include application fees, books and cooking supplies, uniforms, travel expenses and room and board.
Yearly school fees for different types of schools are:
• Community colleges — $2,000 to $5,000
• Culinary institutes — $7,000 to $36,000
• Public universities — $3,000 to $18,000
• Private university — $14,000 to $45,000

I enjoy messing around in the kitchen, and I wanted to give people the resources it takes to look into culinary opportunities.

Being a homecoming queen candidate is harder than you’d think PDF Print E-mail

The candidates for homecoming queen are Kelsey Ruminer, Elizabeth Peddy, Shanice Holmen, Natalie Perez, Alisha Robinson, Ashlyn Stafford, Victoria Wood, Amy Wallace, Ashlyn Lane and I, Alexzandra Cantu. We are all greatly honored to be selected, and we wish each other the best of luck.
The senior football players select us, but it is not that easy. To be a candidate, there are certain requirements you must meet. Those requirements are:

• Meet OSSAA eligibility requirement in the beginning of the school year.
• Rank in the top 50% of the senior class.
• Have no more then 10 absences during their junior year.

Being nominated as a Homecoming Queen candidate is a big moment in a teenage girl’s life. It is a time to get dressed up and look the best you can. Although you may think that is the only thing we candidates have to do, you’re wrong. There is a lot of pressure that we undergo.
We have to figure out which senior football player will walk us. Who is going to drive us? What dresses will we use? Where do we get our dresses? We have to make a poster for the wall and the car. Do our hair and make-up. All this is done in the middle of homecoming week. There is a lot of responsibility when you are a candidate. It is not just fun and games.
I am very happy to be able to have this experience and want to wish all the candidates luck.
