Oklahoma is well known for its schools and colleges, but there is a hidden gem located in Oklahoma City. It’s called the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, or O.S.S.M. for short. The school was founded on the mission to “foster the educational development of Oklahoma high school students.” The school has had countless students go off to colleges such as Harvard, Brown, Yale, Dartmouth and Amherst, yet 60% of students keep their Oklahoma pride and go to colleges’ in-state. Can you imagine going to a prestigious boarding school for your junior and senior year? It can happen to you. The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics is offering openings to gifted sophomores. The rigorous application process is worth the effort. If a student can prove they have what it takes, they might be chosen to live their last two years of high school on campus in Oklahoma City. If you are a serious student, who has a high GPA, a good ACT score, proof of community service and good character, then you are a probable candidate for this school. It is a good place to go if you want to further your education and broaden your horizons before you go off to college. Now, you may think that students from around here couldn’t go to a place like that, yet there have been three students from Hugo High School selected to attend, so far. The most recent was my sister, Estella Noella Curiel, who graduated from O.S.S.M. and is currently attending Amherst University in Massachusetts. I had a chance to talk to her about her experience there. I asked her how O.S.S.M. benefited her life. She said, “It has given me the academic and personal security I needed for college.” I also asked what her favorite part of O.S.S.M. was and she said, “the connections that I made, not only with the students, but also the faculty and staff.” She said that to get in, students need “academic rigor and maturity.” “Don’t stop pushing yourself towards whatever goals you wish to accomplish,” she said to the students of Hugo High.

Hugo High School had its first pep rally of 2009 on Friday, Sept.4. It started with the band playing the fight song, “We’re Loyal.” The freshmen immediately got in trouble because most of us sat down for the fight song. We were quickly corrected by student council sponsor Karen Jones. She stated that we should always rise for the school song whenever it is played at the beginning and the end of the pep rallies. After we had been corrected, the show choir came to center court and sang the school song as well as the Alma Matter. Then the freshmen cheerleaders were introduced and did their cheer routine. They were followed by the varsity cheerleaders who performed their dance after an introduction. Coach Williamson went to center court and had the students chanting “beat Valliant.” He pumped up the whole student body for the game. Afterwards, he had the varsity football team introduce themselves. The varsity cheerleaders came back out and did their second routine. Mrs. Jones was about to award the spirit stick to one of the four classes at Hugo High School. All of a sudden the seniors started screaming and yelling, and Mrs. Jones told them that the spirit stick is won with spirit throughout the pep rally, not just in the last 35 seconds. She went on to award the spirit stick to the football team, which set a new standard because that was the first time the spirit stick had been awarded to the football team. The next pep rally we will all know to stand up during the school song and have spirit throughout the entire pep rally and maybe the freshmen will be able to win the spirit stick.

By Weston Bates Hugo High School Student Reporter Growing up in southeast Oklahoma definitely has its advantages. Although teens complain that there is nothing to do around here, some would disagree. We actually live in the heartland of a country boy’s dream. If there is not a tradition of hunting or fishing in your family, I would be surprised. Some of the best hunting and fishing is in our backyard. Some people may not hunt or fish, but they look forward to being outdoors for peace. However, others enjoy the excitement of taking down a 10-point buck or catching an 8-pound bass. I personally like both hobbies. I have my favorite ponds and parts of the lake to fish. Also, I have my favorite place to hunt. At Hugo High School, we have an outdoor recreation class that teaches students safety while enjoying the outdoors. Fall is the outdoorsman’s favorite time of year. Some people think of Halloween or Thanksgiving. An outdoorsman waits for bow season, black powder season and deer gun season. Don’t forget, after deer season comes duck season. A lot of father and son (or daughter) bonding can take place during these outings. These memories can last a lifetime. Entire families can camp out together and enjoy the beautiful scenery of southeast Oklahoma. We are rich in the abundance of water and wildlife here. This fall, try your skills out on a lake or in the woods around Hugo. |

By Skyler Foster and Jeff Rabon Hugo High School Student Reporters This year, the Hugo Intermediate School is ready for some fun. Hugo Intermediate School is a place where every student should feel like they belong. They have activities and events in which each student can participate. The fourth and fifth grade Buffs begin the new year with fun. The intermediate school has a new principal, Mrs. Bohanan, a former teacher for the Hugo Intermediate School. She knows the student body and is familiar with the faculty and staff. She is very friendly and easy to approach for both parents and students. Her goals for this year are getting CRT scores up and trying to get the students to work together. From the students’ perspective; the intermediate school is organized and enjoyable. They are hoping to add the possibility of basketball this year. After lunch, they have time to play tether ball, basketball, baseball, volleyball and flag football or just hang around and visit with friends. Currently there are 166 students enrolled in the intermediate school. These students are excited to participate in Black and Gold Week starting on Sept. 4 and continuing every Friday. The class with the most students wearing black and gold get ice cream on Monday. There were all smiles for school picture day on Sept. 8. Parent’s Days were Sept. 3, 4 and 17. Parents are encouraged to come and talk to the faculty about the students’ progress. There is one new teacher at Hugo Intermediate School. We would love to welcome the new fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Burnett. She is excited to join the present faculty and help the students raise their CRT scores and help them learn how to work together. The students will strengthen their social skills and get help with homework and projects during the after school program called Prime Time. Prime Time starts at 3 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m. Overall, there is a bright school year ahead for the students of the Hugo Intermediate School. Parents are always encouraged to volunteer and help create a fun learning environment.

Large doses of guarana, ginseng and glucuronolactone. Wait, what? Some of us have wondered about the side effects of energy drinks, if you haven’t been informed then now is definitely the time to learn. Energy drinks like Red Bull, Monster Energy, NOS and many others have large doses of ephedrine, guarana, ginseng, caffeine, taurine and sugar. The average amount of caffeine in an energy drink is 80 mg, which is equal to a cup of coffee. Caffeine, tuarine and glucuronolactone are naturally made in the body. However, the amounts of these ingredients contained in energy drinks are unnaturally high. These drinks are available to everyone and are especially popular with young adults. They are considered to be very powerful drinks because of the high doses of caffeine found in them. They do give you a jolt of energy as a pick me up when you drink them, but they can be dangerous or ever harmful to your health. Energy drinks can have certain effects on the body like raising blood pressure, increasing heart-rate, causing a decline in the immune system and can also prevent sleep. In children, they can cause unwanted side effects such as bedwetting. Energy drinks have been known to dehydrate the body when consumed during exercise. Also, did you know that people have died by mixing energy drinks and alcohol? Since alcohol is a depressant and energy drinks are a stimulant, you don’t know how much alcohol you have in your body until it is too late. |
