Most people know about the so called “battle” between Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh, but is the battle between rivaling companies or between the consumers? Microsoft and Apple both produce operating systems so there is bound to be competition. The bigger battle is, arguably, between the consumers of each company. Users of either Windows or Macintosh are going to favor and talk up their choice because they’re using it, but is their argument thought out or mostly biased? When the subject is brought up, people will usually brag about their choice and trash talk the other, but, most of the time, the person doesn’t have information on both options. There are many more Windows users than Macintosh users. One big reason for this is that Microsoft sells their operating system to most (if not all) computer manufacturing companies such as Dell, HP, Gateway and Asus. Apple, on the other hand, only sells Macintosh on their computers. They also sell the stand-alone operating system but not to computer companies. Some people fall into the “Macs suck” group, but most of these people know nothing about a Mac. I know this because I used to think this way. One day, I watched a video asking viewers about why we think “Macs suck.” This video changed my entire outlook on Mac. When I thought about it, I realized that I didn’t have any reason to hate Macs. I fell into the group of people that hated Mac because they heard someone else say “Macs suck.” After watching the video, I started doing research on Apple Macs, and, it turns out, they are really great computers. I had previously planned on making a custom Windows machine, but instead I purchased a Mac computer. The current Apple operating system is Mac OSX Snow Leopard. OSX (pronounced O-S-10) runs just as smooth if not better than Windows 7. I have used OSX as well as Windows 7, and they both run great. Although they are different, both are very easy to pick up and use. Windows 7 is Microsoft’s newest operating system and is a huge improvement on Windows Vista. Windows 7 has less glitches, runs smoother and includes many new features compared to Vista. I haven’t been able to take full advantage of Windows 7 because I don’t own it, but, compared to XP and Vista, I think OSX is far superior. I have been using my Mac since June. At first, I was running both of my computers simultaneously, but now I have transitioned to using just my Mac computer. Currently, I prefer Mac to Windows, but I could be biased because I don’t own a Windows 7 computer. I have owned one Mac and multiple Windows computers. All in all, both Windows and Mac are great operating systems. If you’re planning on buying a computer and have some money, I definitely recommend looking into a Mac. There is also Linux but that’s for another time. |

These days a lot of students have needs and wants that sometime allowances won’t cover. High school seniors are in need the most because of the many expenses they have in their last year. College students also have many new expenses such as moving out of the nest and attending school. These expenses can be handled using your very own credit card. Credit cards are small plastic cards issued to users and are a part of a system of payments that entitles users to buy things based on the user’s promise to pay for these items. Credit cards allow consumers to “revolve” their balance plus paying interest. Parents should assist their teens in managing their card and show them when and how it should be used. They must learn to balance their checkbook and pay their monthly credit bill on time. Doing this could help avoid many different fees and show your teen responsibility. However, misuse of credit cards can negatively effect your finacial future for many years. Your minimum monthly payment is not enough to actually pay off your debt. It will just help you shy out of immediate financial trouble. If you miss or skip a payment it will be reported to a credit agency and show up on your personal credit report and score for many years. It can keep you from acquiring loans for school or even purchasing a home or car. Think long and hard before you apply for a credit card. Be prepared to pay almost double for the item in the store. That’s what it will end up costing you if you can’t pay for it within the same month of your purchase.

Every year all over America, students will buy a show animal that they will be able to demonstrate for their local FFA or 4-H. When you show animals, you can either raise your own or buy one from somebody that raises them to sell. I will focus on the cost of a show calf and what you have to do to keep it healthy and ready to show. There is never really a break between the show seasons, as soon as you get through showing one animal, you have to have one that you raised ready or go shopping for one. Here in Oklahoma there are many people who raise certain breeds of show calves. Also, there are sales and auctions set up especially for selling show calves to people looking. Whenever you go to one of these sales you will have a wide variety of breeds of calves, but this also means that there will be some very good calves there that will cost a lot more than some of the others there. However, if you do not have the money to buy a $5,000 calf, there are calves out there that haven’t been discovered by anyone yet and will sometimes be very cheap. As you are reading this, you are probably asking yourself how much it costs to be involved in showing calves. A good show calf around here may cost $3,000 but I have won grand champion with a calf that I bought for $900, and of course there are calves out there that will cost $15,000 but this will enable you to win a lot more shows than just your county show. Once you have bought the calf you like, you will need to set up shelter for it and feed and water it every day. Although this may sound simple and easy, it actually is very complicated at times. There are certain types of show feeds that you can feed your calf, but, like most calves, the better they are the more they cost. This also applies to the feed. If you show a steer, there is a starter and finisher feed, a starter feed is a feed that keeps them healthy and helps them gain weight. A finisher feed is a feed that puts fat on the ribs of the steer. If you show a heifer, you have beet pulp to put in your feed, which you can wet down and it will fill them up better. Also, if you would like to do well with your calf, you should feed, water and exercise it everyday. To exercise it, you can walk it around the pin you have it in. However this is not the only thing you have to do, you need to wash it and blow dry it. You can buy blowdryers that are specially designed for show calves. You do this because it helps keep the hair trained to stand up and easier to clip. You can watch some of the local shows around Hugo to see if you would like to compete. |

Teenagers are sometimes challenged on how to spend free time. Some do not make wise decisions on how to spend free time. These decisions involve illicet drugs, drinking, drinking and driving or getting money to fund these activities. Teenagers often point out that they make these decisions because there are a lack of healthy activities available in Choctaw County. This article will respectfully point out the lack of healthy activities in the county. Teens enjoy going to the movies, however our own Mac theater in Hugo was closed down in recent years. Now teens have to travel to Paris to see a show. That’s dollars that could be spent in Choctaw County. Another healthy past time that Hugo offered was the skating rink. Every weekend this was a popular spot where elementry and junior high age students could socialize and get some exercise. Hugo skating rink was also closed in the last decade. The youth in Choctaw County would always look forward to the day when the city pool opened. All summer students had the opportunity to swim and be together in an appropriate place to gather under the summer sun. Sadly, the city closed the pool. We have no bowling alley or family fun center. We believe that students and their families would be willing to spend money in these areas instead of taking their money to Texas. A teenager should always be responsible for making the right decions and choosing not to participate in unlawful or illegal activities. |

Two weeks ago, students were at school just like every other day when excitement started to grow. For the first time in what seemed like forever, snow was coming down hard and actually sticking to the ground. Instead of everybody being bored and in bad moods, people were excited and ready to go outside. As the school day came to an end, everyone couldn’t wait. Finally, the last bell rang, and as soon as it did all athletes reported to the field house where we planned to have a big football game. As soon as everyone made it there we divided into teams and began the game. Not only was the game fun, but everyone’s excitement made it even better. We were running around like it was the first snow we had ever seen. Probably because it hardly ever snows here and if it does, it’s usually not even enough to stick. There are many different activities that can be done in the snow. Some of the most common are sledding, building snowmen and having snowball fights. These activities are fun and make the snow great, but many people love the snow just for the beauty. Even though we probably won’t see another snow compared to last week’s in a while, we still made the best of it when it was here. |
