On this day in history, many important events happened. We would just like to share a couple of them with you.

• On Feb. 4, 1861, delegates from six southern states met to form the Confederate States of America.

• On Feb. 4, 1789 George Washington and John Adams were inaugurated as president and vice president.

• On Feb. 4, 1959, the first “Barbie” doll was introduced in a toy company in New York.

When life hits you with a curveball it doesn’t mean you should give up on your self-confidence.
Life is unfair, and rough, but why let your spirit get down?
Always think about monumental feats you have done to build self-confidence.  Build up your confidence by achieving goals in life that make you have a sense of pride. Never be pessimistic about yourself or anyone else.
If you make a mistake in life, improvement is in your grasp. You’re always learning; a mistake in life is just a lesson to teach you to never do anything like that again.
Once your self-confidence is strengthened, life will be so much different.  It will be exciting and not depressing. Think of yourself as a star. Your confidence is everything. If you can’t believe in yourself, then who else will?

Rats are not a very desirable creature. In history they were blamed for the bubonic plague. They are big, ugly and carry germs, and we have them in classrooms at Hugo High School.
Several teachers have reported finding rats either dead or alive in their classrooms. Some rats can be heard in the ceilings, some are traveling the window sills and scurrying into cabinets. Other rats have been found deceased between cabinets and the wall.  Our janitors have been  diligent about putting out poison and trapping others. Yes, this is an old building, but we do not have to put up with rampant rodents invading our school.
Recently, Mrs. Golden made an announcement that no food or drinks are to be consumed inside our building during school hours.  Also every vending machine will be unplugged during this time to help with our problem.
On Sunday, Jan. 17 an alarm went off at 4:30 a.m. The Hugo Police drove to the custodian’s house, woke him up and they all went to the high school where they searched and searched but found nothing. Finally, they looked at the video footage and there was one large female rat and seven babies that had apparently tripped the alarm.
During class on the third floor there was an encounter between students and a rat. In a quiet class a student said, “Everyone look over there.” It was  a rat that was shaking like it was very ill. Mrs. Step said, “Oh my gosh. Hurry, hurry kill it before it leaves and comes back.” But there was nothing to kill it with.
A student goes to Ag and grabs a shovel. When the student finally got up to the third floor, someone threw a book at it to slow it down, it was stuck momentarily. The student went stabbing at it but all we got was a foot. However, the rat was still alive and ran behind a cabinet. Two students ran and pushed the cabinet in. But the rat was just  stuck until the custodian came and finished the job and all that was left was the student’s detailed story.
Hopefully, when spring arrives the rats will want to go out and play.  The age of our building is a factor for all kinds of pests. There are many places to hide and reproduce.
This is another important reason for building a new school.

New construction in Hugo is often welcome. If you have noticed the new building going up on the west end of town, you are not alone. Many people are curious as to what it is going to be.
Recently I spoke to Lance Patterson, the director of Choctaw Nation Health Centers in Durant. He is very excited about the construction of the Hugo Wellness Center. This massive building will be a place for fun, fitness and health development.
The building is going to be a total of 10,000 square feet and can serve up to 150 people per day. There will be on-duty trainer assistance if needed. There will be a half court basketball and volleyball court, and a multipurpose fitness room with weights and treadmills and many more exercise machines. There will also be a children’s fitness room, which uses video games such as Dance Dance Revolution, a dancing game that uses exercise to win the game.
There is an after school program for children to do their homework and enjoy games and exercise when they’re finished with schoolwork. There will be after school buses that will provide transportation to all who need it. The Wellness Center is to be opened by May 1, 2010. We are all looking forward to this great addition to Hugo.
