Aromatherapy gives off a calming effect that helps relieve stress. The smell of an oil that appeals to you can have an instant pleasing effect on your psyche and your well-being. Aromatherapy can transport you to a familiar place with familiar smells and can help to balance you in times of stress and agitation.
Essential oils can help to calm or can help to “pick you up” if you are feeling down and worn-out. Walking into a room of a house that has used aromatherapy for cleaning and as an air freshener creates a more enticing and inviting atmosphere and is also much gentler on the nose.
The essential oils are very strong and concentrated so it is recommended that you use what is called a carrier oil, such as olive oil or almond oil. The concentration is so high that you only need two to three drops of essential oil per cup of carrier oil.
Aromatherapy is also good when treating cancer patients. For example, lavender is an excellent treatment for insomnia resulting from cancer treatment and is a great general relaxant. Rosemary is good for muscle pain, cold feet and hands and high blood pressure and also aids the loss of appetite.
Smells affect our everyday life. They can predict how we are feeling and what mood we take on. Let’s face it, we all could use a little bit of aromatherapy once in a while.

Hugo High School’s Art Program has been handed to Mrs. Kelsi Kiper. She was the substitute art teacher for most of the first sememster.
Kiper has been doing a great job so far as a substitute art teacher. She has taught students many things ranging from paper mache masks to flip books (multiple pictures put together to create movement). Kiper is a very qualified art teacher.
She has great ideas about what to teach and how to go about doing it. She looks to find each student’s specialty in art, whether it be drawing, painting, etc. Not everyone is great at drawing and not everyone is great at painting. Students might be great sculptors and not even know it. Kiper is showing students many different art forms so they can find something that they will love.
Kiper is fantastic at what she does because of the way she reaches out to students. She is able to teach things that students will love and remember for the rest of their lives.
I am looking forward to learning different art forms from Kiper this semester.

Super Bowl Sunday is approaching, preparations are being made for food and fun during this exciting event. Some families have a traditional celebration for the Super Bowl. Family and friends travel long distances to be together for the event. The menu usually takes planning and thought. Some of the favorites are nachos, buffalo wings, hero sandwiches, chips and salsa and many other dishes.
We personally look forward to the camaraderie between family and friends. In a group like this, there is always someone who roots for the opposing team, making the banter sometimes lively and heated.
Our prediction for this year’s Super Bowl may surprise you. We believe that the Dallas Cowboys will face the San Diego Chargers and the Cowboys will come out on top 28 to 21. Wouldn’t that be great, Cowboys fans?
The Highway Patrol and local police will be writing many tickets on this day, so remember don’t drink and drive. This day is most fun when mixed with family and friends instead of alcohol.
We had the opportunity to ask a few teachers and coaches about their Super Bowl predictions.

Students surveyed say staying up too late the major cause of receiving tardies PDF Print E-mail

Schools across the nation have various tardy policies. Here at Hugo High School if a student receives three tardies, they will have to serve a day of detention. So if there’s discipline involved, why are students still coming to school late? I stopped some students in the halls and asked what their reasons are.
Waking up too late was the most common answer. Students set their alarm clock for a certain time, but it usually just gets turned off when it sounds. Once the students wake up, it’s already too late for them to get ready, eat breakfast and make it to school on time. I asked a few students if their alarm clock isn’t working, how do they wake up. Most said that either a parent will yell in their direction or they’ll somehow remember to get up.
Some students mentioned the nights before school in which they stayed up too late. Therefore, in the morning, the student is too tired to wake up for school. I asked the students what are some reasons why they stay up so late. Most said they don’t really do anything in particular, it just takes them a while to fall asleep. Once students are on a late schedule, every night they will likely be up fairly late.
Whether alarm clocks are ineffective or late nights cause major sleepiness, it is required that students are at school. If students arrive at work late, they won’t be given multiple chances like at school. Maybe there should just be an alarm clock invented that throws ice cold water on a person, then no one would ever be late to school.

Hugo High students give blood to Red Cross PDF Print E-mail

The sight of it frightens us. If we lose too much, we could die. We need it to live. Blood is a specialized bodily fluid that delivers necessary substances to the body’s cells — such as nutrients and oxygen. It transports waste products away from those same cells. Blood plays a major role in the body’s defense against death.
On Nov. 13, Hugo High School students gave blood to those in need. American Red Cross came to accept our blood donations and in exchange gave us T-shirts.
American Red Cross says that every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood and only five percent of the eligible U.S. population donates blood every year.
If giving blood was more of a priority to Americans, it would make a very big difference for the thousands of people who need blood transfusions every year.
Hugo High School students are helping make a difference between life and death. We are aiming to be heroes.
