“The people who gave us golf and called it a game are the same people who gave us bagpipes and called it music.” — “Silk Stockings” TV Show
Yes, golf is a Scottish-born sport. Golf as we know it today originated on the eastern coast of Scotland in the kingdom of Fife during the 15th century. Players would hit a pebble around a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive club. While these games are stick and ball games; they are missing that vital ingredient that is unique to golf – the hole. Whatever the argument, there can be no dispute that Scotland gave birth to the game we know as golf today. Golf has been a quick growing sport for America. One of America’s most well known golfers, Tiger Woods, has won countless championships. Golf’s status and popularity quickly spread throughout the 16th century. The first commoner recorded as a golfer was Sir Robert Maule in 1527. The term “caddie” comes from French military helpers known as cadets. Mary Queen of Scots is known as the first female golfer. However, there weren’t any female golf teams until 1810. Today, golf is not the same. You don’t have to make your own clubs, you can simply buy a set right from your home on the Internet. The average set of clubs could cost you more than $200. A nice pair of golf shoes could cost more than $250. Local green fees can range from $15 to $22, and can change anywhere depending on the golf course. However, there’s a great bunch of local golfers who are willing to help young golfers find economical equipment and give tips on the game. At both Hugo golf courses, Rock Creek and Hugo Country Club, they have information that would be great for a beginning golfer. Golf is a great sport to play while relaxing or when you have a day off from school or the office. Hugo High School has a golf team coached by Mr. Jim Schutts. If you are interested, contact him or any coach and express your desire to play. Who knows, it could turn into a lifelong hobby.

“One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go cat go!” Those are the words in one of Elvis’s most famous songs, “Blue Suede Shoes.” Last spring, I had the opportunity to see Graceland, Elvis’s home in Memphis, Tenn. I was most impressed by the rare photos and displays. We went to his car museum with my favorite car being the pink Cadillac. Other interesting cars were a black Rolls Royce and many Cadillacs of different colors. He also owned an orange snowmobile and several golf carts. Inside the mansion, a guide led us through many rooms. There was a jungle-themed room, a giant room displaying all of his music memorabilia and a huge kitchen and dining room on the floor we toured. However, we were not allowed to tour the bedrooms or basement. The gated cemetery at the back of Graceland is where most tourists linger. Inside the wrought iron fence is not only Elvis’s gravesite, but also those of his parents and his twin brother who died at birth. All in all, my visit to Graceland was very enlightening. I learned to appreciate the talent of the King who was famous and died before I was even born. |

A very important person that works at our school and makes it clean and neat is Willie Carey, our janitor. Carey has been a janitor for a year and a half at Hugo High School. Carey gives advice when asked and her duties as a janitor are to clean rooms and look out for the school and the kids. She said the job is not hard and she didn’t go to college to be a janitor. However, Carey did go to college. Carey has owned Hugo’s flea market for 10 years. She also worked for Tyson food for six years. Cutting hair has been a part of Carey’s life for 32 years. Carey opened her first beauty salon for black women in this area and helped other women become hair stylists. Others places Carey has worked include hospitals in Chicago and in Arkansas and she was a punch press operator at Imperial Wave. Carey’s work ethic is a great example for the students who work with her. She always has a smile and a kind word for people she encounters.

Your senior year is your most expensive year as a high school student. This is because everyone wants to be remembered by everyone else, but this remembrance comes with a price. These costs appear when students have to purchase senior items. First, there is a yearbook to order. If you order early, it’s $30, but if you procrastinate the price can be as high as $60. Secondly, you must put a $75 deposit on your cap and gown. There is also class rings to consider if not already purchased, which can run from $89 to more than $300. Next, there is the letterman jacket, which some seniors don’t qualify for until their senior year, and the price is approximately $150. In the spring semester, you must consider getting your senior pictures made. These packages range from $75-$250. Your announcements packages will cost an additional $50 beyond your deposit. Then there is the senior t-shirt and hoodie, which alone cost about $50. As you can see, it takes big bucks to pay for all these memories. I hope you have a savings account.
