Putting out cookies for Santa And going to sleep Sneaking around the corner And taking a peek Unwrapping presents And jumping for joy Running around screaming Because you got a new toy
Singing Christmas songs And eating good food Just hugging your family Because you’re in a good mood
Playing in the snow And shaking because you’re cold Enjoying the Christmas lights Red, green, blue and Gold

Everyone celebrates various holidays and has their own traditions and ways that they celebrate. Some people celebrate Christmas, some Hanukkah and others Kwanzaa. There are certain things that make the holidays complete no matter which one is celebrated. My family celebrates Christmas and it is never complete without the family gathered around the Christmas tree with all its glam and glimmer. We wake up at early hours to unwrap gifts and see what treats were left in our stockings. Then we have a Christmas dinner at the usual gathering spot—Grandma’s house. After trying out our new trinkets and gadgets, we gather around to share and just visit with one another. Hanukkah is the Jewish holiday that is also known as the Festival of Lights. It lasts for eight days. A candle from the candelabrum is lit every night through the duration of the holiday. Kwanzaa is a holiday honoring the African heritage and culture. It is a seven day celebration with activities such as candle-lighting, pouring of libations, a feast and giving gifts. So no matter what holiday you celebrate, make sure to enjoy it. Happy Holidays!

There are several places in and around Hugo that are tourist attractions. We may take the sites for granted because we live here. There are places in our community that are highly acclaimed throughout the state. Perhaps our most famous and visited site is Mount Olivet Cemetery. Tom Pence is the superintendent of the cemetery. He and his crew do an excellent job keeping our cemetery clean and beautiful daily. Here are some interesting and little known facts about our own Mount Olivet: The first grave ever recorded at Mount Olivet is dated Feb. 16, 1907 and it was a baby girl. The baby was originally buried in the far right corner but was later moved to a more central location. The first section of Mount Olivet was the very back eastern section, which was originally called Pottersfield. There are 26 people buried there in unmarked graves. Only two monuments stand in Pottersfield. One, was thought to be an outlaw who was hung and the county paid for his burial. Tom Pence said few people know that the native rock wall that surrounds the cemetery has several designs incorporated into the rock. A wagon wheel, a heart and a star are some of the designs. The Darrough family donated funds to complete the fence on the south side with the beautiful wrought iron gates on the south side of baby land. The tiny chapel was originally the office, Pence said. When it was converted to a chapel, eerie music used to be played daily. One of the most famous attractions is Showman’s Rest. People travel great distances to see the unusual headstones and unique epitaphs on display. One of our favorites was “he had more friends than Santa Claus.” Currently there are 7,462 graves in Mount Olivet. There are 2,178 more plots that are sold. Hugo’s cemetery continues to be one of the nicest in Oklahoma. As citizens, we should respect the hard work of the grounds keepers and not use our cemetery as a place to exercise animals. Some residents enjoy walking on the nice paved roads, and getting daily exercise while enjoying the seasonal weather. Hugo is proud of Mount Olivet and the beautiful and respectful resting place it has become. |

Each year, our school has faculty duets. Show choir students volunteer to sing with a teacher from the school. The teams choreograph and sing a Christmas song of their choice. Hugo High School’s faculty and students vote for a team by putting money into the team’s bucket. The team that wins receives a plaque and bragging rights. The teams this year are: Kiera Jones accompanied by Cara Dominick, Trey Rosenthal accompanied by Sunny Williamson, Jordan Cochran accompanied by Eric Langley, Caitlin Bounds accompanied by Susan Stepp, Valerie Wilson, Kristy Lopez accompanied by Carla Rabon, and Matthew Allen accompanied by Casey Frost. The duets will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18th in the high school gymnasium. So come on out and participate in the fun. |

The Hugo High School Art Club is an interesting organization. It was started in 2007 by Mr. Hanson, Hugo High School art teacher, and currently being run by Mrs. Kiper. The Art Club currently has no requirements for joining, except a passion for art. It is open to all Hugo High School students regardless of grade level. Students don’t have to be enrolled in art to join. The club does various projects, such as helping the school with backdrops and painting the football field. They hold fundraisers to obtain funds for trips and other needs. Every year, members have visited the Oklahoma City Art Museum. The museum changes its exhibits every couple of months. Some of the rotating exhibits have been Roman art from the Louvre and art from the Harlem Renaissance. The Art Club also has fun with personal projects such as pumpkin carving or shirt designing. Meetings are every Wednesday at the Hugo High School art room. If you wish to join, simply attend a meeting. The Art Club welcomes everyone to join.
