As a teenager, fashion is a big part of my life, as well as many teenagers in America. I keep up with everything from the latest shoe styles to the latest hairstyles, and it is not an easy thing to do. Fashion is constantly changing — something that may have been in one season may be out the very next season. That is where I come in. I am going to fill you in on some of the hottest styles today. First I have to start with the tights. Yes, tights have been in for a while now, but recently tights have gone to a whole new level. If you have the old solid color tights, trade them in for some new animal print tights. You can always update any old dress or skirt. Another big trend that is going around currently is graphic tees. You can make a big statement with these expressive t-shirts. Finding one is easy, but finding the right one to match your personality is a bit more challenging. As for foot wear, the style is the sleek ankle boots. These shoes can be paired with anything from skinny jeans and a cute top to a dressy dress. Fashion is a big topic to touch on. I gave you three very “in” trends. Go out and make the world look good. |

Ever notice how some people can paint beautifully but have difficulty adding two and two? Or how some people can understand trigonometry with no problem but they struggle to write a one page essay? It’s all about which side of your brain is dominate. The brain is split into two parts, the parts are known as the left brain and right brain. Different parts of your brain control different parts of your body. People who use the right brain are usually artistic — they usually like to do stuff like singing, painting and writing poetry. Left brain people usually are more mathematical and are better at word problems. I am definitely right-brain dominate. I noticed at a young age that I didn’t excel as well in math as the other subjects. My brain likes history, arts and music the best. These subjects are easier for me to comprehend. Even though we may be right brain or left brain dominate, we should exercise the side that is weakest by doing practices in those areas. Some very lucky people excel at both left and right brain activities! |

Every year, all of Hugo Schools have a Christmas can drive, to help families with their Christmas dinner. Some families do not have enough money to buy all of the things needed for a good dinner. Even though the schools are having a Christmas can drive, there is another way for families to get food. The Hugo Food Pantry is a place for families in need. Although it is a place to get free food, all families have to have a social security card for everyone in the family, proof of income and a bill in the mother or father’s name. Area churches also host canned food drives and choose needy families to receive food, gifts, clothing and much needed attention at Christmas. I would like to spotlight all the holiday help that is offered in Choctaw County this year. If you know of needy families or know of churches or institutions planning to help, please e-mail us at

Epitaphs may seem like a gloomy subject, but they really have a lot of meaning. Epitaphs are one way that your loved ones can be remembered. An epitaph is a short text honoring a person that has passed. If you’ve ever lost someone, you understand that you have memories. When I read an epitaph, the memories come back to life and it gives me a good feeling. Epitaphs are there to tell of good things a person has brought to the world. Some epitaphs are short and some are lengthy. It all depends on the person responsible for the burial. They can be spiritual, a statement the person always made or of something the person always did. Some people even write their own epitaphs before their death. The next time you think of the cemetery, don’t think of dark and gloomy scenes. Here at Hugo we have a beautiful cemetery and it is quite a tourist attraction. Everyone should stop by Mount Olivet Cemetery and take a look at all of the epitaphs. |

You’re driving to a friend’s house and you hear your phone start to ring: It’s an incoming text message. You reach for your phone, which is on the far side of the passenger seat. Then... Teenagers hear the statistics over and over again. We hear our parents and teachers tell us how bad it is to text and drive, yet we continue to do it. If you would like to know some statistics you can visit www.keepthedrive.com, a source for valuable information all teens and their parents should know. Instead of me telling you statistics, I am going to put it into other terms. Family is the basis for mostly everyone’s life. We teens want to live up to our parent’s expectations and make them proud. We give our parents joy and happiness. So why would any of us want to take that from them? I ask that question in all seriousness, because texting while driving is a death wish. You hear a car horn honking, so you instinctively look up to see that you have drifted into oncoming traffic. You pull on the steering wheel trying to get the car back in the right line, but it’s too late. You crash head-on into a semi. Then what? You’re gone. You left your family and friends and your whole life has just flashed before your eyes. Now it’s over. How do you expect your family to go on in life without you? What about your little brothers and sisters? They looked up to you, they needed you and you left them. You knew better than to text while driving. So why did you do it? Your mom has crashed. She has gone into a severe depression. Your dad doesn’t know what to do or what to think. Your siblings are confused. Friends of the family try to help them, they tried talking to your family but nothing works because you’re still gone. That is where the story ends. Because of texting and driving, you are gone and your family is damaged forever. Think before you text while driving.
