The U.S. Military has five branches, one of which is the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard has many missions including national defense, port security, federal law enforcement, search and rescue, port and waterway safety and protecting the environment. The Coast Guard offers a wide range of jobs from cooks to intelligence specialists and small boat operators to helicopter pilots. In order to join the U.S.C.G. you need to meet the following requirements and contact your nearest recruiter: You must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien to apply. You must be between the ages of 17 and 27 to join, have a high school diploma, but GEDs are accepted in some rare circumstances although they aren’t usually. Other requirements to join include a minimum score of 45 on your ASVAB, you must also pass Coast Guard basic training. The physical requirements for male recruits are that you must complete 29 push-ups in one minute, 38 sit-ups in one minute, a one and a half mile run in under 12 minutes and 51 seconds and a sit and reach of 16.5 inches. Female recruits must complete 15 push-ups in one minute, 32 sit-ups in one minute, a one and a half mile run in under 15 minutes and 26 seconds and a sit and reach of 19.29 inches. Both male and female recruits must pass the Coast Guard’s swim test in which you must jump off a five-foot platform into the pool, swimming 100 meters and treading water for five minutes. Don’t be afraid to join if you can’t swim because swimming lessons are available at boot camp. |

“Precious” is a movie that I would encourage you to go and watch. It is based on the book Push by Sapphire. Claireece “Precious” Jones, played by Gabourey Sidibe, is a 16-year-old African-American girl that no one wants or cares about. She’s pregnant for the second time by a father who is never home. Her mother, played by Monique, is an angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. Precious’s school life is chaotic. She has reached the ninth grade but has an awful secret: she can’t read or write. Threatened with expulsion, she is offered a chance to go to an alternative school. Even though Precious goes through rough times, she always keeps confident that possibilities exist for her. While at the alternative school, she begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination. If you haven’t watched this film, you need to.

Mike Rabon is a star. Are you confused? Well, we all know Rabon as a computer teacher, but he is also a member of the Five Americans. The band started in 1964, but Rabon actually started way before that. He began playing at the age of 11 on a homemade guitar. He took a couple of piano lessons from a teacher in town, but he mostly taught himself by listening to music. He was influenced by Elvis, The Beatles and the Dave Clark Five. Rabon has had many memories with his band. One would be when the band had to use a substitute because the organ player was ill, and as Rabon was introducing the band to the crowd of 15,000, he turned around to see that the substitute was running off stage. The fill-in actually caught a plane all the way home. Rabon’s largest venue to play for was 30,000 in the St. Louis Coliseum. He still enjoys playing, and his most recent performance was at the History Center in Oklahoma City. Rabon does like some newer bands like Coldplay and the Dave Matthews Band. He considers a song to be Rock ‘n’ Roll if it appeals to a particular genre and has a traditional 4/4 beat. “Music adds another dimension to your life and brings enjoyment along with a sense of accomplishment,” Rabon said. |

There are many great opportunities in this community, whether it is for the youth or for adults. One of which is the Choctaw County Boys & Girls Club. The current Boys & Girls Club has been running for approximately four years. This organization is a great place for kids to have fun and socialize with others. The construction of a new Boys & Girls Club will start very soon. I had a short interview with Choctaw County Boys & Girls Club Director Brad Greer. The new BGC is estimated to be 15,000 square feet. It will be located next to the Choctaw Memorial Hospital, at the site of the old glove factory. Eight thousand square feet of the BGC is set to be finished in May 2010. “The second half (the other 7,000 square feet) can be used for holding high school band and cheerleading practices,” Greer said. The new BGC originally included two indoor public swimming pools. The estimated price was set at $600,000, but it has since been changed to $1,000,000. The BGC is currently looking for funding for the pools to be built indoors. The club will still include two swimming pools, but they will be outdoors instead. Both of the pools will be open to the public. The two pools will be of different depths. One of the pools will include a zero-entry, which will lead into the full depth of four and a half feet. This pool is handicap accessible. The second pool will be for more experienced swimmers with a depth ranging from four feet to eleven feet. This pool will include a diving board along with swimming lanes that can be used in races. This construction project is not only for a new Boys & Girls Club, but it is also for a huge recreational area for people of all ages. There are many attractions that are or will be built in this area such as a playground, outdoor bathrooms and baseball fields. Brand new playground equipment has attracted many citizens to this area of town. There is a softball field that will be finished by spring. A regulation baseball field as well as a T-Ball field are scheduled to be built as well. The project will not only help the children but the entire community and is a great new addition for our town.

Positive communities have positive schools. They create a bright atmosphere within their city limits and schools always benefit the most from this positivity. However, sometimes citizens aren’t aware of how to create a bright, positive and influential atmosphere. If you don’t know how to help our school, after you read this article there will be no doubt that the options are there for the taking. All the schools in this district have events consistently throughout the year. By attending these events, citizens show they care about Hugo students and are willing to take time out of their busy schedule. Football games, band competitions, parent-teacher conferences, pep assemblies and anything else put on by Hugo Schools are just a few events that are available for community support. Even if you don’t have a kid that attends a school in the district, it means a lot to students when you show up. As the advancement of education continues to be an important concern in our country, many scholarships, jobs and internships are being created and revealed. If you know of any type of education-related program or anything that will help out students, share your knowledge with the school. Notifying our counselors of the opportunities available to Hugo students is greatly appreciated and will show that you care for our education. Donations of technology, school supplies and any other items needed at school are always welcome. If you or someone you know is willing to give the school a donation of some sort, visit the school and tell them how you want to contribute. Many organizations have fundraisers periodically through the year, you can support them by buying a few products. A couple of dollars can go a long way. The most important task that I give you is to spread the word that Hugo Schools are great. I’m a student here, you wouldn’t be telling a lie. In order to have a positive school consistently, the members of our community must speak highly of it. You have no excuse; you have several options on how you can help Hugo Schools. Now you just have to go out and do it.
