Can teenage girls get breast cancer? The answer is yes, but breast cancer is very rare at adolescence. On the other hand, breast lumps are common at this time of life. This problem is explained by the fact that teenagers often get cysts or tumors in their breasts that are not cancerous. These result from sensitivity to estrogen. Most of the time, these kinds of lumps will disappear on their own, but it is always a good idea to have them checked by a doctor. When a lump is found, doctors will usually wait up to three menstrual cycles before taking any action, as they most likely will disappear. Mammograms, which are x-rays of the breasts, are not generally helpful for teenagers but they wouldn’t be a bad idea. Teenagers often learn breast self-examination techniques when they visit the gynecologist so this will become a health habit by the time they reach their 50s when their chance of breast cancer increases. Some encourage teenage girls to get mammograms because early detection would lead to a better outcome in the long run.

Hoof Prints is filled with young journalists who are very excited about writing stories and producing a school newspaper. Everyone in the class is required to write a story every week and we then choose which stories should be put into the paper on every Thursday. In order to write a story, a person must research and find facts about their writing topic. Interviews, Internet surfing and even referencing the encyclopedia are all a part of writing a story. Once the story is completed, it is edited, then eventually printed in the newspaper. However, in order for good journalists to continue writing good stories they must receive feedback. So what we are asking here at Hoof Prints is for you to provide as much feedback as possible to us. By giving feedback to us, we can take in your comments and use your tips when writing our stories. Even if you just would like to see a certain article written on a given topic, we’d love to hear from you. So if you dislike a story, love it or just want to provide some tips or comments on it feel free to e-mail us at

Family is one of the most important aspects of life. Therefore, spending time with family should be very valuable to a person. In the world today, with all the violence and anger, we should all spend more time together. Doing this will strengthen the family’s relationship and help keep them together. Families shouldn’t waste any time, but should use time together to teach the importance of bonds and traditions. There are many reasons for spending time with family. Some of these reasons are to build a deeper relationship, instill family values in children, teach children important life lessons, and build a stronger family unit. These family roles should be exercised to resolve and improve family issues. If a family follows these roles it will make them stick together through the rough and fun times. Grandparents are a huge source of love and support. They usually give the family roots and tell stories of past trials and success. Grandparents help younger children learn their place and importance. They put major emphasis on love and sharing. We should all dedicate at least one day a week to family. A day where members of the family go to movies, eat out at a local restaurant, enjoy the outdoors or just stay inside and talk for a while. Families must enjoy each other in order to stay together.

Music is a huge part of just about everyone’s life. Some people only listen to one genre of music. However, being exposed to other styles of music helps a person to understand other generations and become well rounded. Hugo High School Show Choir is a class made up of 19 very active and vocally talented kids. We work hard on our vocal parts and then master the dance steps to our songs. Members get to dance with different partners and learn that teamwork is always needed. Carla Rabon, show choir instructor, is a nice person, but when it comes to preparing our music she cracks the whip. We are expected to sing and dance our best every day. The class has a personality — we share mistakes and laughter while learning not to take criticism personally. “‘80s Dance Party” is the theme for our fall concert. The music is fun and challenging, while the dancing is always full of surprises. Several solos will be featured in the concert. Justin Davis, Brandarius Lane and Trey Rosenthal will all be singing songs from the ‘80s hit parade. Don’t miss this event. Our choir works hard daily to present a professional show. Come show your support for the Hugo High Show Choir. “‘80s Dance Party” will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Hugo Junior High Gym. Mark your calendars and come enjoy the local talent.

Get ready for one of my favorite times of the year — deer season. Deer season is something most people in Choctaw County look forward to all year long. It all starts with preparation. There are many things you need in order to have a successful hunt. Most of these items can be purchased at our local Wal-Mart. You will need a buck or doe tag; you can get either one for a price of $10. You will also need a rifle, primitive rifle or bow, depending on the season. A knife, matches, flashlight, GPS or map, disposable camera and 400 square inches of orange on your camouflage or an orange hat or vest are all possible necessities. A backpack or small bag is a great item for packing all of this gear. Deer season requires patience and long hours of determination. The night before your hunt or the day of, do not bathe or shower in any regular shampoo or body wash. Try not to use scent soap. You should try to be in the woods right before the sun comes up when it is dark enough to not be seen. You should have already staked out a site or already placed your deer stand or blind in a great tree or field with good viewing. Another good idea is using doe estrus for attracting a trophy buck. You may want to bring a book or magazine with you so you won’t move around or shake while you are in your deer stand or blind. A successful hunt doesn’t always mean you kill the big buck of the year. Deer are fun animals to watch. Try out deer hunting this year. it’s a great hobby and you’re sure to enjoy it.
