As our regular season comes to an end, the last two games are very crucial to making it to the playoffs. Any team is only as strong as its unity.
The Hugo Buffaloes are unified in our quest for the playoffs. We remind each other that these last two games are very important and if we don’t win, the playoffs will not be an option. Just recently we have realigned and now have no negativity or bad attitudes on the team. Positive outlooks help us work toward our goals.  Sometimes practice just seems like practice, but it’s really a daily chance to rededicate our efforts to improve. We would like to challenge senior players to be an outstanding example of leadership and effort on and off the field for the rest of the season.
Let’s show these underclassmen that being a Buffalo means pushing past negativity and striving for greatness. Encouraging each other is all it takes to achieve the unity that’s so important on a team. Let’s go Buffs!

A “good teacher” isn’t defined by how much they know or teach. A good teacher is one who tries to keep the students’ needs in mind, one who makes sure that the students have a strong understanding and actually cares for their well-being.
Good teachers encourage students to take risks and always have a positive attitude. Patience is important for good teachers. These teachers understand that errors will be made but they try many different methods of teaching that encourage students and create in them a sense of accomplishment.
One very important quality for a good teacher to have is loving to teach. First, you have to love what you are doing in order to do it right. Teachers have to be calm. Chances are, if a teacher is loud and impatient with a student, the student will either quit or get upset with the teacher.
Respect is also necessary. Most students respect the teachers that respect them. Humor needs to be used sometimes, too. When you make a student laugh, it draws them into the conversation for a better learning experience.
Different teachers have different qualities but everyone knows when they see a good teacher. We have plenty of good teachers here at Hugo High School and we are glad that they are here.

Some teenagers think that staying up all night won’t affect them. That is where they are wrong. Did you know 90% of youth between the ages of 11 to 17 years don’t get the proper amounts of sleep needed? I know you’re thinking: Why do I need sleep? Well, I’m here to tell you why.
The most common reasons teens have trouble falling asleep is because they are stressed, anxious or worried about school or their social life. Sleep deprivation in adolescents can negatively affect behavior, emotion and attention. It is a significant impediment to learning, attainment of social competence and quality of life.
As a teenager you are going through a lot of changes, both physically and mentally. You need all the rest you can get, which should be between 8 and 9 hours of sleep each night. The body does not operate properly when it doesn’t get enough rest.
Sleep deprivation does not only effect teens at school. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration drowsiness and fatigue cause more than 100,000 traffic accidents each year; and young drivers are at the wheel in more than half of these crashes.
Here are some ways to help a person get to sleep faster:
• Go to sleep in a cool, quiet bedroom.
• Do not sleep with the television on, any lights flickering will be a disturbance so it must be dark.
• Exercise a couple of hours before you go to sleep.
So you see, sleep is an important part of a teen’s life. It is a basic necessity, like food and water. So give yourself a break and go catch some Zzzzs.

I always thought a Broadway play would be so boring. I never thought watching a play would be more interesting than watching a movie.
This summer, my family and I had the opportunity to get second row seats at the Broadway musical, “Wicked.” I really thought I wouldn’t enjoy it much at all, but to my surprise, as soon as the play started I was already enjoying it and all my attention was on the monkeys swinging above the crowd. I was amazed by the actors that played the monkeys; they had to be on stage the whole play continuously crouched on their haunches. The monkeys weren’t the only actors that were impressive; the costumes and makeup were excellent and the acting is what kept my attention throughout the whole show.
Being so close to the stage made the experience more interesting. The facial expressions throughout the play were phenomenal. The actors could act extremely well but that wasn’t all —every one of them could sing and dance well, too. The play lasted a long time and I was glad because I was really into it.
I had a great time and really enjoyed watching the show. I would love the chance to see another one. Everyone should watch a Broadway play during their lifetime. According to The Broadway League, Broadway shows sold approximately $937 million worth of tickets in the 2007-08 season, so many people are watching.

Some people think joining the military is an early grave, but it can be beneficial to finding a great career. The military can aid you in getting a career that would make you love going to work everyday. If you have no plans after high school maybe you should consider the military in your future.
The military offers many opportunities, such as money for college, job experience, life insurance, housing for those who qualify, enlistment bonuses and much more.  The enlistment bonus can range from $20,000-$40,000. Another bonus would be the PaYS program which offers Army and Army Reserve soldiers a guaranteed job after their time in the Army. This partnership, only for Army soldiers, began in 2000 since then it has promised more than 53,000 soldiers an opportunity for success. These benefits can make the military a life changing experience. The military gives you a chance to travel throughout the world and get to know many different people and cultures.  Whether it is the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Guard or any of the reserves, this can be a great career path.
When joining any branch there are steps you must follow to get all you can from this experience. First, you should get familiar with each branch by learning their duties and where they go. Next, decide if you’re ready by thinking of reasons for joining, basic eligibility rules and benefits. Then, choose your career path by asking what branch do you like the most and if you want to be an officer. Following that, you should meet a recruiter who will tell you of frequently asked questions. After this, you should take the ASVAB. This determines your job and how much you get paid. Complete this process by going to M.E.P.S.
While there, you should make sure you choose the job that best fits you and your career field. Once joined you should do your best and enjoy.
