HUGO — The one-cent sales tax election previously scheduled for Tuesday, March 2, has been canceled. District Attorney Lara Wallis notified the Choctaw County Board of County Commissioners Wednesday that the election had not been lawfully called. Apparently, state laws requiring that the public be notified about the election were not followed. The Choctaw County Commissioners have called a special meeting for 1 p.m. Friday for the specific purpose of: “consideration and possible action on resolution regarding canceling March 2, 2010 election due to DA opinion.” The meeting will be in the commissioners’ second floor offices at the courthouse and is open to the public. |

HUGO — Smiles abounded Thursday evening as Hugo and Grant FFA and 4-H youth received their prizes for placing in the Hugo Junior Livestock Show. Chili and stew supper were served and a labor auction was conducted to help raise funds for the Choctaw County Junior Livestock Show, which will be March 3, 4 and 5. The auction was conducted by Boswell resident Robbie Chandler. Students were auctioned off for eight hours of labor. Winning bidders have to provide them with lunch the day they work. Pies and other desserts were also sold. “It’s good for them to get out and work and be seen in the community,” volunteer Pam Waugh said. One of the highest winning bids of the night was $310 by Perry Thompson for Sarah Thompson. Superintendent Tony Daugherty, High School Principal Debbie Golden and other Hugo administrators also put down money for the cause.

HUGO — Lt. Steve Babcock of the Hugo Police Department said a rash of auto burglaries over the last few months have few leads. He warns people not to store items of value in their vehicle, especially purses, when they are away. Babcock said the majority of the burglaries have involved women’s purses, which are often left in plain view, stashed under a seat or hastily covered up. “The burglars are still able to see the purses or a portion thereof and within 10 seconds have shattered the window and taken the purse,” he said. They then take the stolen bag to a safer area where they remove the cash and valuables and dispose of the purse. Police report several of these crimes have occured at churches and other public venues. “Women need to remove their purses all together and if that’s not possible, place the purse into the trunk,” Babcock said. “These crimes can be averted by these two simple precautions.” |
