Choctaw County swine flu vaccine clinic set for Thursday PDF Print E-mail

HUGO — The Choctaw County Health Department has scheduled an H1N1 flu clinic from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 except for the noon hour.
Initial doses will be provided to those priority groups most at risk from complications of swine flu, which include the following:

• Pregnant women
• School-aged children Pre-K through 12th grade
• Children 6 months of age to 18 years with a pre-existing medical condition
• Health care workers in direct contact with acutely ill patients.

Hugo High School to send a junior to Washington, D.C. PDF Print E-mail

HUGO — It was announced Hugo High School has been chosen to send a student to Washington, D.C. and the Nov. 10 election were dicussed in Monday night’s meeting of the Hugo Board of Education.
Three principals gave their reports to the board. High School Principal Debbie Golden reminded everyone that the football game is Thursday this week. She also reported that Congressman Boren has requested a Hugo junior to go to Washington, D.C. to page for four months. Juniors interested in the program will be required to write an essay, fill out an application and be interviewed. The program will be January to June 2010.
The student chosen will attend classes from 6:45 a.m. to noon and work on Capitol Hill in the afternoon. The student will receive a salary to offset expenses. Golden said one school is chosen in Oklahoma every three years, so it is an honor for Hugo High School to have the opportunity to send a student. Elementary School Principal Nancy Welch said nine weeks have been completed so far. Teachers are conducting benchmarks to insure that students are up to date in math and reading. She said they are focused on making sure the students are really getting it.
The middle school principal, Glen Martin, said report cards will be distributed Wednesday and congratulated the three students who won trophies at the Red River Valley Show Choir. The intermediate school principal was not present.
Superintendent Tony Daugherty reported on vandalism that occurred at the high school over the weekend. Several air conditioning units were broken into. Copper and other scrap were stolen from the units. The perpetrator was caught and is currently in Lamar County jail, Daugherty said. He said it would cost $10,650 to replace the air conditioners. An insurance claim has been filed and is waiting on a final police report. A blower used to clean the football stadium was also stolen.

Local group collects care packages for the troops PDF Print E-mail

HUGO — The Hugo chapter of Oklahoma Home and Community Education kicked off its “Just Let Them Know We Care” troop drive Oct. 1 and will continue through November. The organization will be sending letters of support and care packages to troops overseas.
Items needed for care packages may include microwaveable/non-perishable foods, hot chocolate, packaged instant coffees, drink mixes, snack items that fit easily into pockets and won’t melt, individually wrapped candies, personal care items like sun screen, combs, lotions, dental floss and eye drops, phone cards, puzzle books, books, magazines, board games, playing cards, DVDs and CDs.
Donation boxes will be placed at City Drug, The Trophy Case, The Nail Shop, Family Dollar Store and Orscheln. Collection boxes will be shipped no later than Dec. 11.
Anyone who would like to have their loved one included in the project or anyone who would like to make a cash/check donation may call Linda Knight at 580.326.7773.
Hugo Home and Community Education members participate in voluntary community projects and have canning, sewing and cooking classes along with many other activities. Their meetings are held on the second Monday of each month. The organization welcomes new members.

Cowboy Churches’ ranch rodeo finals Saturday in Hugo PDF Print E-mail

HUGO — The Oklahoma Fellowship of Cowboy Churches is holding its ranch rodeo finals in Hugo, Saturday, Oct. 3, which will be hosted by Cowboy Crossing Church of Hugo.
Top ranch rodeo teams from Cowboy Churches all over the state of Oklahoma will compete for saddles, buckles and other prizes. The event is free to the public and will be held at the Hugo Rodeo Arena. Breakfast will be served beginning at 9 a.m. and the ranch rodeo begins at 10 a.m. There will be chuck wagon cooking, music and concessions available throughout the day.
An auction will be for held for Tripp Taylor, infant son of Ernie and Krystle Taylor of Hugo, to raise money for medical expenses.
The Oklahoma Fellowship of Cowboy Churches is an organization that helps to start cowboy churches across the state and bring them together for fellowship, support and encouragement within the cowboy culture. Any cowboy church is welcome to be a part.
“The cowboy churches are growing by leaps and bounds in Oklahoma,” said Mike Merritt, preacher of Cowboy Crossing Church of Hugo and associate director of the Oklahoma Fellowship of Cowboy Churches.
The group has started eight churches this year and 12 more are in the works. Cowboy Crossing Church of Hugo has been conducting services on Sunday mornings for more than a year. On average, 100 or more are in attendance and 17 have been baptized this year. Services are held at 10:30 a.m. with coffee and donuts at 10 a.m. Their outreach ministries include the ranch rodeos, play days, free concerts and a chuck wagon ministry.
