Choctaw Resort and Casino to host grand opening PDF Print E-mail

GRANT — Escape the heat and celebrate the grand opening of Choctaw’s new Casino Resort in Grant with a chance to win $25,000 during the cash giveaway from July 6 to 11.
Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma began its gaming endeavors in Grant with Choctaw Racing. On April 15, 1999, Choctaw Racing opened and offered gaming enthusiasts off-track betting. In 2001, Choctaw Racing changed its name to Choctaw Casino, moved into a doublewide trailer and coupled the off-track betting with 70 slot machines and seven associates.

Soper Homecoming begins Saturday PDF Print E-mail

SOPER — The city of Soper will be hosting its annual homecoming Saturday, July 4.
The day’s events will start with a 10 a.m. parade beginning at the Soper gym. A free barbecue will be held at 11 a.m. across from the gym followed by a turtle race. At 7 p.m. guests can enjoy gospel singing also at the gym.

BOSWELL — Boswell’s 72nd Annual Homecoming kicks of Friday evening with their 2009 theme, “Country Folks Can Survive.”
At 8 p.m., the Boswell Rodeo Association UPRA rodeo begins at Hwy. 70, east of Boswell.  
On Saturday, princess crowning and a parade will start the day downtown. At noon, the town is hosting a free barbecue luncheon and parade awards will be announced.
The afternoon events include a turtle race 1 p.m. at Boswell Skate Park,  Christian rock music 3-8 p.m. at Victory Life Church and the Boswell Alumni Class Reunion 4 p.m. at Boswell School.
At 7 p.m. the Boswell Rodeo continues and rodeo queen will be crowned. 9 p.m. - 12 a.m. citizens are invited to dance in the street with The Big Whiskey Band.
Prize giveaways will be occuring throughout the day including a Las Vegas giveaway at 10:30 p.m.
Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to the weekend events.
 
Water discoloration not harmful to health PDF Print E-mail

HUGO — The minerals iron and manganese have been discoloring the water in some parts of Hugo.
City Manager David Rawls said that the minerals are not harmful and do not affect drinkability. However, the minerals may affect clothes washed with bleach, leaving stains that are hard to get out.
“We can treat the discoloration and should have it under control shortly,” Rawls said.
 
Three injured in Fort Towson collision PDF Print E-mail

FORT TOWSON — A 1997 Chevrolet driven by Todd Franklin, 25, of Sobol collided with a 2008 Ford F250 driven by Gervace Collins, 59, of Hugo at 11:47 a.m., June 21 on U.S. 70 and Raymond Gary in Fort Towson according to Oklahoma State Trooper Blades.
Franklin was headed eastbound on U.S. 70 while Collins, with passenger Debbie Collins, 51, of Hugo, was traveling westbound when Franklin’s vehicle went left of center striking the Ford on the driver’s side front fender. Collins’ vehicle rolled approximately two times and came to rest on its tires.
Franklin was pinned for approximately 15 minutes and was freed by Fort Towson Fire Department with the Jaws of Life. He was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview, Texas and was admitted with head and arm injuries in serious condition.
Gervace Collins was transported to St. Edwards Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark. with head and arm injuries in fair condition. Debbie Collins was transported to Choctaw County Hospital, treated and released.
Franklin was reported by the trooper to have been drinking and his ability impaired.
