Local group collects care packages for the troops PDF Print E-mail

HUGO — The Hugo chapter of Oklahoma Home and Community Education kicked off its “Just Let Them Know We Care” troop drive Oct. 1 and will continue through November. The organization will be sending letters of support and care packages to troops overseas.
Items needed for care packages may include microwaveable/non-perishable foods, hot chocolate, packaged instant coffees, drink mixes, snack items that fit easily into pockets and won’t melt, individually wrapped candies, personal care items like sun screen, combs, lotions, dental floss and eye drops, phone cards, puzzle books, books, magazines, board games, playing cards, DVDs and CDs.
Donation boxes will be placed at City Drug, The Trophy Case, The Nail Shop, Family Dollar Store and Orscheln. Collection boxes will be shipped no later than Dec. 11.
Anyone who would like to have their loved one included in the project or anyone who would like to make a cash/check donation may call Linda Knight at 580.326.7773.
Hugo Home and Community Education members participate in voluntary community projects and have canning, sewing and cooking classes along with many other activities. Their meetings are held on the second Monday of each month. The organization welcomes new members.
 
Cowboy Churches’ ranch rodeo finals Saturday in Hugo PDF Print E-mail

HUGO — The Oklahoma Fellowship of Cowboy Churches is holding its ranch rodeo finals in Hugo, Saturday, Oct. 3, which will be hosted by Cowboy Crossing Church of Hugo.
Top ranch rodeo teams from Cowboy Churches all over the state of Oklahoma will compete for saddles, buckles and other prizes. The event is free to the public and will be held at the Hugo Rodeo Arena. Breakfast will be served beginning at 9 a.m. and the ranch rodeo begins at 10 a.m. There will be chuck wagon cooking, music and concessions available throughout the day.
An auction will be for held for Tripp Taylor, infant son of Ernie and Krystle Taylor of Hugo, to raise money for medical expenses.
The Oklahoma Fellowship of Cowboy Churches is an organization that helps to start cowboy churches across the state and bring them together for fellowship, support and encouragement within the cowboy culture. Any cowboy church is welcome to be a part.
“The cowboy churches are growing by leaps and bounds in Oklahoma,” said Mike Merritt, preacher of Cowboy Crossing Church of Hugo and associate director of the Oklahoma Fellowship of Cowboy Churches.
The group has started eight churches this year and 12 more are in the works. Cowboy Crossing Church of Hugo has been conducting services on Sunday mornings for more than a year. On average, 100 or more are in attendance and 17 have been baptized this year. Services are held at 10:30 a.m. with coffee and donuts at 10 a.m. Their outreach ministries include the ranch rodeos, play days, free concerts and a chuck wagon ministry.

One dead in Coal County collision PDF Print E-mail

TUPELO, Okla. — State Trooper Mark Benedict, 56, of Coalgate, Okla. was conducting a routine traffic stop Thursday on State Highway 3, seven miles east of Tupelo in Coal County, when Michael Allen Penny, 42, of Marlow, Okla. fled the scene at a high rate of speed eastbound, according to the trooper’s report.
The report states Penny’s vehicle, a 1991 Ford SUV, then intentionally traveled left of center and struck a westbound 2009 Peterbilt semi tractor and trailer driven by Joseph Leonard Reyor, 60, of Anadarko, Okla. Reyor attempted to evade collision by pulling onto the shoulder, but the vehicles struck head on. The trooper’s report said Penny’s vehicle then traveled across both lanes and struck Benedict’s 2005 Ford 4D, which was on the eastbound shoulder.
Penny was pronounced dead at the scene. Reyor and Benedict were treated for injuries at Mary Hurly Hospital in Coalgate, Okla. and released.
 
Smoke tests to be performed in Hugo’s Ward 2 Tuesday PDF Print E-mail

HUGO — The city of Hugo will be smoke testing in Ward 2, which is east of the railroad tracks and north of Jackson, starting on Sept. 29.
The smoke is not harmful in any way and City Manager David Rawls asked that citizens not be alarmed.
 
Swine flu cases now reported in county PDF Print E-mail

HUGO — Oklahoma Health Department officials are now reporting that cases of the H1N1 swine flu have indeed been confirmed in Choctaw County.
Regional Health Department supervisor, Rhonda Dennis, said Monday there have been two cases of swine flu confirmed in Choctaw County. Dennis said that did not mean there were not additional cases, because there is no reporting requirement from schools or area doctors.
Dennis said in all proability, any cases of flu being experienced in Oklahoma presently were all swine flu, as no cases of the seasonal flu have been identified.
Recently, more than 20 students in Hugo schools have been out with flu symptoms.
