By Gloria McAfee Carver Contributing Writer HUGO –– The Red Nose Cafe event was billed as: “fun, food and festivities” and it certainly hit the mark Friday evening in Hugo, “Circus City.” Playing to a full house, the third annual Red Nose Café fund-raiser, benefiting the Hugo Circus Museum and Park, was held at the Kiamichi Technology Center featuring international cuisine, live circus acts, door prizes, and a “Cutest Clown” contest for the youngsters. Tatum Fancher, 5, of Hugo, won “Best Clown” and a brand new bicycle in the age 6 and under category. Koda Hudson, 9, also of Hugo, won the “Best Clown” and a brand new bicycle in the 7 through 12 age category. Koda and Tatum did some real clowning around with professional circus clown, Ryan Combs. The bicycles were donated by the Donaldson Ace Hardware store. |

Contributing Writer Ask someone who has never set foot inside a museum, and they may define it as “a place where old stuff is kept.” That, my friends, is an understatement. A museum is an institution in the service of society, which acquires and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity. It exists for the purpose of inspiration, education, and enjoyment. It is synonymous with: Antiquity, Artifact and Heirloom; it comes from a word of Latin origin dated back to 1605. I invite you to visit the community of Fort Towson, founded in 1902, and located in Choctaw County, southeast Oklahoma, where stands, among several historic sites, the Museum of Decorative Arts. The Fort Towson Museum of Decorative Arts was founded by California resident, Mrs. Morynne Motley, in fond remembrance of her family and childhood in Fort Towson, and as a gift to this generation and future ones. |

By Joanne Webster Contributing Writer SAWYER ––The Sawyer board of trustees, upon a motion by Tom Mandrell, approved the Choctaw County Hazard Mitigation Resolution as it was read and presented during Monday evening’s meeting. The consent agenda, which consists of the Dec. 17 minutes, financial statements provided to the trustees in writing, purchase orders and claims, were approved upon a motion by Sharon Matthews, following questions from the board regarding a request from the owner of the Finish Line for research about the cost and procedure for improvements to the Internet systems. It was suggested that the matter be brought up during a meeting or in the pre-meeting workshops. Police Chief Darrell Armstrong presented the police report in writing. It was mentioned that the activity had been slow so far this year. Some questions were answered as posed to trustees regarding the helicopter landing system. During the weekend, an accident required the helicopter’s landing at the fire department. |
