HUGO — The Hugo school board approved a mid-term budget adjustment for state and federal allocations Monday evening in a special meeting.
Superintendent Tony Daugherty said state budget cuts have caused the school to be more than $223,000 short of its budget.
“We got cut 4.42%,” he said. He added that there are no proposed further cuts at this time, but it is possible more may come as the legislature comes back into session.
More money has been received from federal sources since the Jan. 11 meeting and at the moment, accounts are positive. Some money the school receives is restricted to specific programs, and in those areas, Daugherty said, they are not lacking. It’s on general operating funds that the school is going to have to cut back.
The superintendent said he has met with all of the principals and made routine budget cuts. They cut $42,000 from encumbrances and cut $135,000 by paying for custodial salaries through the building fund. There is about $46,000 additionally that needs to be cut and the board discussed possible expenditure reductions.
Some possible reductions include, no field trips — excluding athletic, band and student competitions — non-competitive student trips must be funded by the student activity fund or by donations; no workshops/travel for teachers unless the cost is reimbursable from a grant or donated funds; spring extra-curricular activities monitored closely and canceled games not rescheduled unless they affect playoffs; all athletic, band, choir, FFA and FCCLA purchases to come out...
