HUGO — The Hugo School Board accepted the resignations of two teachers and two coaches with no discussion during Monday night’s regular meeting. Resigning were high school math teacher Suni Williamson, high school art teacher Steve Hanson, high school and middle school head softball coach and PE teacher Brent Shaw and head football coach Daryl Williamson.
During public comment at the end of the meeting, Jack Goodrich, Hugo High class of 1962, approached the board about considering Jimmy Webb for the open football coach position. Members of the class of 1961 were present to show their support for Webb.
Board members reviewed bids on the lease/purchase of four school buses. The three large buses and one small bus with a lift would be paid for over five years, at which time the school district would own them. The total will be about $275,000 plus financing interest. Superintendent Tony Daugherty said the district is hoping to receive a $101,000 USDA grant to help pay for the vehicles. Board President Brad Greer expressed concern that the district might not receive the grant, however, he was informed that the school district needs new buses now because three currently owned by the district are in disrepair.
On recommendation from Daugherty, Joey Brindley motioned to accept and the board approved the quote as presented from Midwest Bus Sales.
Each board member received a general overview report on school year 2010-2011 programs. The packet included overview of reading, science and math courses as well as the gifted and talented program. The district has decided to serve gifted and talented students within the classroom instead of in a separate program. Teachers will give those students in kindergarten through fifth grade more challenging curriculum. Middle school and high school students will be offered to take honors classes and pre-AP.
