Jamming out in the garage isn’t just for poor renditions of “Free Bird” or “Back in Black.” For Hugo band Adjourned, it’s about coming together to create original Christian rock music.
It all started when guitarists and good friends Collin Houchen and John Carpenter decided to enter into the Hugo Middle School talent show in eighth grade.
“That didn’t go so well,” Carpenter said with a laugh. However, they didn’t let it get them down and instead it encouraged them to practice harder.
Over the years, the band has grown. Members now include Houchen, guitar; Carpenter, guitar and back up vocals; Adrian Zen, lead singer and acoustic; Luke Lawrenson, keyboard and acoustic; Josh “Remo” Ostrey, drums; and Matt Bell, bass.
Now with six members, they are set to perform live Sunday, Aug. 29 as an opening for Arkansas Christian alternative rock band Spoken. Adjourned will play three songs starting at 7 p.m. at Journey Coffee House in Paris, Texas.
Adjourned plays Christian metal — heavy rock music with a Christian message to the lyrics.
“Our goal as a Christian band is not only to talk about God but to try to get kids and teenagers — who lately haven’t been so Christian — to look into it and see that they can find salvation somehow,” Zen said.
