HUGO — A student pilot from Rattan, Okla., who was practicing night landings reported missing four deer standing on the runway at Stan Stamper Municipal Airport last Thursday evening, but the fifth, an 8-point buck, he was unable to miss.

According to Hugo Airport Manager, DeWayne Pence, Phillip Teague was landing from north to south, and struck the deer about one-third down the runway from the north end.

Pence said the airplane’s propellor struck the deer, which then careened off the plane’s left wing, damaging the leading edge of the wing. Pence said Teague was not injured, and after removing the deer from the runway, was able to taxi his damaged airplane to its hanger.
