By Amber Hanneken Staff Writer HUGO — It was announced Hugo High School has been chosen to send a student to Washington, D.C. and the Nov. 10 election were dicussed in Monday night’s meeting of the Hugo Board of Education. Three principals gave their reports to the board. High School Principal Debbie Golden reminded everyone that the football game is Thursday this week. She also reported that Congressman Boren has requested a Hugo junior to go to Washington, D.C. to page for four months. Juniors interested in the program will be required to write an essay, fill out an application and be interviewed. The program will be January to June 2010. The student chosen will attend classes from 6:45 a.m. to noon and work on Capitol Hill in the afternoon. The student will receive a salary to offset expenses. Golden said one school is chosen in Oklahoma every three years, so it is an honor for Hugo High School to have the opportunity to send a student. To learn more about the program visit www.pageprogram.house.gov. Elementary School Principal Nancy Welch said nine weeks have been completed so far. Teachers are conducting benchmarks to insure that students are up to date in math and reading. She said they are focused on making sure the students are really getting it. The middle school principal, Glen Martin, said report cards will be distributed Wednesday and congratulated the three students who won trophies at the Red River Valley Show Choir. The intermediate school principal was not present. Superintendent Tony Daugherty reported on vandalism that occurred at the high school over the weekend. Several air conditioning units were broken into. Copper and other scrap were stolen from the units. The perpetrator was caught and is currently in Lamar County jail, Daugherty said. He said it would cost $10,650 to replace the air conditioners. An insurance claim has been filed and is waiting on a final police report. A blower used to clean the football stadium was also stolen.
