| Hugo School District voters reject annexation proposal |

By Amber Hanneken Staff Writer HUGO — The unofficial results of Tuesday’s special Hugo Schools election were 694 (84%) against and 133 (16%) for. The result means properties in the Messer Community will not be de-annexed into Rattan School District. Hugo Superintendent Tony Daugherty expressed appreciation to all who voted and supported the school during the election process. “We hope we won’t have to have another election like this,” he said. “It is something we (as a school district) pay for. We don’t have the resources to pay for elections like this every year.” The superintendent went on to say that he was sorry some people were upset enough with the schools to lead to this kind of election. He said state law prohibits school districts from driving buses into other districts to pick up students. So although parents are free to transfer their children to other schools, they have to provide transportation for them. The Choctaw County courthouse and all offices inside were closed Wednesday in observance of Veterans Day.
