Several District 19 residents have asked the Hugo News to investigate recent court activity relating to candidate Anthony DeVore. According to McIntosh County court records, Devore pled “nolo contendere to/of being a spectator for cockfighting.” The records further state that video evidence showed DeVore in attendance of at least one cockfight between May 2025 and June 2025.

Buffaloes lose tight game against Preston Pirates, 7-6

The Hugo Buffaloes stroked out 10 hits and and plated six runs last week against the Preston Pirates, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the Pirates in a close 6-7 loss. Hugo’s lead-off hitter, Jakoby Teague again led the Buffaloes with three hits and Jayka Santillan had two.

HUGO — The Antlers Bearcats made the short trip down 271 to challenge the Hugo Buffaloes on their home field Monday on a near-perfect baseball day. Living up to their historic rivalry status, the two teams battled back and forth with Antlers opening the contest with three first inning runs.

OMRF to study cell’s ‘powerhouse’ with an eye to Alzheimer’s

An Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientist, backed by a $2.3 million grant, will investigate the many roles of the mitochondria, often called the powerhouse of the cell. The National Institutes of Health awarded the grant to Tommy Lewis, Ph.D., whose lab studies the importance of mitochondria in brain function.
