Gearl Wayne Archey, age 81, peacefully departed this world on Oct. 21,2023. The family enjoyed the last Friday night with him in OKC, laughing and relishing his trademark “possum grin.” He was born on April 20, 1942, in Soper, Okla, the son of W.E. and Johnnie (Goforth) Archey. Gearl’s journey through life was filled with love, laughter and dedication to his family and passions. He was preceded in death by his father, William Edgar; his mother, Johnnie Archey; his brother, Harold Archey, and his cherished grandson, Chris Archey.

A proud alumnus of Soper High School, Gearl went on to serve the OK Department of Corrections for 26 dedicated years as the Farm Manager for the Howard McLeod Correctional Center in Atoka, Okla., ensuring the safety and well-being of his community. After retiring, he turned his attention to full-time farming and ranching, where he found immense joy and fulfillment.

Gearl was not only a skilled hunter but also a man of remarkable marksmanship skills. He honed these skills during countless hunting expeditions for wild game in the rugged terrain of Southeastern Oklahoma. However, it was his deep love for his family, particularly his grandchildren, that truly defined Gearl. They held a special place in his heart, and he relished every moment spent with them. He shared his wisdom, passions, and sense of humor, creating unforgettable memories that will forever be cherished. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye, and his love for them was unwavering.

His passion for sports was evident in his unwavering support for the University of Oklahoma –– “Boomer” and the Dallas Cowboys. In his quieter moments, he enjoyed classic western movies, taking solace in the company of his cherished animals, Roscoe and Charlie. Gearl had a special fondness for observing the world around him, from the playful antics of squirrels to the graceful flight of hummingbirds.

A key milestone happened for Gearl this month as he enjoyed the last moments with dear family and friends. He made his peace with the Almighty God, Creator of Heaven and earth by fully accepting King Jesus Christ as the Saviour of his heart and soul. Gearl was obedient to follow Jesus in a public water baptism at the Pushmataha Hospital in Antlers on Oct. 14, 2023. May we all see his example and rejoice with Heaven’s host of angels as they received him with open arms!
