Susan Gaye Smith
Susan Gaye Smith passed away peacefully on Feb. 2, 2026, at the age of 80, in Hugo, Okla. Born on Feb. 28, 1945 in Durant, Okla., the daughter of Rush T. Winters and Jane Gaye (Hood) Winters. Susan was a cherished soul whose warmth and compassion touched all who knew her.
Susan, affectionately known as Sus by her loved ones, dedicated her life to nurturing the minds and hearts of the young as an elementary and special education teacher. With a Master’s Degree in education, she influenced countless lives during her 36-year career, from 1971 until her retirement in 2007. Her passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom, as she invested her time and talents in decorating the school and supporting the theater program, enriching the educational experience for all students.
Susan’s legacy is carried forward by her beloved husband, Lonnie, of the home; her daughter, Danette Farmer and son-in-law, Travis of Fort Towson, Okla.; her cherished grandson: Zach Samaha and his wife, Asheton of Ada, Okla.; and her treasured great-grandchildren: Malcolm Ray Samaha and Stella Samaha, both of Ada. She is also survived by her sister, Ginger Winters of Fort Towson. Preceding her in death were her parents.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026 in the Fort Towson School Gym, under the direction of Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to sign the guest book or send private condolences to the family at www.praterlamptoncom. The family asks that memorial donations be made in her name to the Fort Towson Public School.
