Lucien G. Helton, affectionately known throughout his life as Shockey, passed away on July 17, 2024 in Hugo, Okla.

Born on Dec. 30, 1928, in the humble beginnings of Crossroads, Texas.

Shockey lived most of his life in West Texas/New Mexico working in the oilfield. In 2002 he moved to Hugo to live out his dream of being a rancher. He enjoyed playing dominos, going to the sale barn and being a rancher. Shockey was a lifelong member of Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Loyed Helton and Mary Agnes Helton; son, Thomas Helton; son-in-law, Larry Lee; wife and mother of his children, Judy Helton; wife, Helen Helton; brothers: Jr. Helton and J.W. Helton.

Shockey is survived by his children: Barbara “Bobbie” Lee of Hugo, Billy Don Helton and wife, Mary Lou Helton of Odessa, Texas, and Joyce Rice and husband, Dan Rice of Denver City, Texas; grandchildren: Dustin Lee and wife, Sarah Lee of Roseville, Calif., and Mindy Fancher and husband, Aaron Fancher of Hugo; great-grandchildren: Tatum Fancher, Samantha Lee, Caleb Lee and Piper Fancher; sister, Bobbie Dell Kirby of Coleman, Texas.

Arrangements are under the direction of Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home. In true testament to Shockey’s roots, the family has planned to gather in New Mexico at a later date to lovingly lay his cremains to rest. His wisdom, laughter, and presence will be profoundly missed yet forever celebrated by those who were fortunate enough to have been part of his journey. With Shockey’s parting, we are reminded to cherish each moment, hold our loved ones close, and lead with a heart as open and warm as his.
