Graveside services for Howard Martin Hess were held Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025 at Valliant Cemetery.

Howard Martin Hess, 68, passed on from this life on Nov. 15, 2025 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 22, 1957 in Okinawa, Japan, the son of Howard Virgil Hess. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sarah Michelle Hess; and son, Michael Shane Benjamin.

Howard spent most of his life in the McCurtain County area, graduating from Valliant High School. He went right to work after graduation for Weyerhaeuser in Valliant, where he dedicated 29 years of service and retired as a millwright. Beyond his professional career, he served his community as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), as well as an active member of the Swink Volunteer Fire Department. Howard was often among the first to respond when his neighbors needed help and his contributions to the safety and well-being of his community will be long remembered.

Howard’s work didn’t stop there; he was a dedicated cattleman and horseman. He raised cattle and horses throughout his life and was something he truly enjoyed. Summers were a particularly busy time for Howard, as he dedicated himself to cutting and bailing hay, ensuring his animals were well-fed and the land was well-tended. Howard leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love for the land, and above all else, a love for his family that will be felt for generations to come. Howard is survived by his wife of 33 years, Pam Hess of the home; his children: Cody Hess of Valliant, Shayna Benjamin of Antlers, Okla., Justin Benjamin and wife of Hugo, Okla., Tabitha Ebert and husband, Daeson Benjamin of the home, and Dakota Benjamin of the home; nine grandchildren; some lifelong friends, along with a host of other family, friends and loved ones.
