Shirley Jean (Boone) Cooley
Shirley Jean (Boone) Cooley, lifelong resident of Hugo, Okla., passed into eternity on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the age of 89, in her home. She was born to Fred W. and Juanita Ozell (Hutchins) Boone on Nov. 22, 1936 in Hugo, the only daughter among four brothers. Graduating from Hugo High School in 1955, Shirley went on to receive her training in Oklahoma City at Draughon’s Business College. After Jack Cooley returned from military service in Korea, they were joined in marriage on July 20, 1956 in Hugo, and chose to make their home and raise a family there.
For 20 years, Shirley directed the Transit division of the Little Dixie Community Action Agency, retiring in early 2000s. She enjoyed activities with the Pierian Club, and serving the area as a member of the board for the Choctaw County Public Library. Shirley and Jack worshipped and served for many years with the 4th & Jackson Church of Christ in Hugo.
Shirley is survived by her son, Jackie Cooley and his wife, Cyrisse of Colorado City, Colo.; grandsons: Jason Schulz and wife, Jennifer of Silo, Okla., Ryan Kessinger and partner, Chris Kessinger of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Shawn Cooley of Corvallis, Ore.; two great-grandsons: Jagger Schulz of Silo, and Connor Antony Kessinger of Colorado Springs; great-granddaughter, Ava Marie Schulz of Silo; brothers: Larry Boone and Gary Boone; many nieces and nephews, and a host of dear friends and church family.
Those preceding Shirley in death include her parents, Fred and Juanita Boone; her daughter, Denise Schulz; her grandson, Nathan Schulz; and her brothers: Billy and Frankie Boone.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at the 4th & Jackson Church of Christ in Hugo. Following the service, Shirley will be laid to rest in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2026, at the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Chapel in Hugo.
