Sue Shannon
Sue Shannon, of Hugo, Okla., passed into eternity on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by the love of her family. Born Opal Alberta Sue to the late Albert Charles Calhoun and Minnie Opal (Taylor) Calhoun on July 13, 1941, in San Angelo, Texas, she was known simply as Sue. She married Benjamin Shannon, Sr. on Feb. 25, 1956, and together they shared nearly 63 years of marriage before his passing in 2019.
Sue was a devoted mother, grandmother, and lifelong caregiver. She took great pride in her work as an LPN, and was known for her dedication, strength, and incredible work ethic at Choctaw Memorial Hospital, Lane Frost Rehabilitation, Elmbrook Nursing Home, and Homestead Nursing Home. Caring for others was something she truly loved, and she was devoted to her career, working from 1966 at Silver Leaves Nursing Home in Garland, Texas, and continuing nursing until the age of 77.
Outside of nursing, Sue enjoyed traveling, camping, quilting, collecting bells and Coca-Cola memorabilia, and bringing her family together for the large family reunions she cherished. She loved being surrounded by her family and creating memories with them. She leaves behind a tremendous family to cherish her memory, including her children: Charles Shannon of Salina, Okla., Cheryl Reed of Hugo, Frank Shannon, Jr. of Hugo, Gerald Shannon of Hugo, Terry Shannon of Hugo, Nathan Shannon of Okinawa, Japan, Tim Shannon of Hugo; a granddaughter; two bonus daughters; 23 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; her parents; a daughter-in-law; and her siblings: Audrey, Leo, Bobby, Sonny, Lavonda and Gerald.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, at Victory Life Church of Hugo. Following the service, Sue was laid to rest at Springs Chapel Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Prater- Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home.
