Vernell Grant
Vernell Grant, 79, was born on Feb. 14, 1946 in Speer, Okla., the son of Buster Grant and Ruby Jewel (Whitmore) Grant.
He passed away Oct. 5, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife of 43 years, Billie Jean (McCarty) Grant; son, Ulysses Grant; son, Vincent Akins; two grandchildren, and sister, Sally Ann Hall.
Vernell lived in Hugo his entire life. He married the love of his life, Billie Jean McCarty, in 1965 and they led a loving and faith-filled life raising their children together.
His career spanned several industries, reflecting his versatility and strong work ethic. He spent years at Campbell Soup, operated heavy equipment at the rock crusher and was a line driver for Texas Waste Management.
Vernell was deeply involved in his church, serving as a deacon of the New Olive Baptist Church for many years and was a member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church. He loved the Lord and sharing the gospel with those he loved. He was also a member of Men’s United and the Masonic Lodge. Vernell was known for having his door open to whomever needed it and would help anyone in need. He found joy in sports and being outdoors. Vernell coached little league and pony league baseball teams for 23 years and was a Babe Ruth little league state qualifier. Vernell inspired young athletes not only to improve their game but also to grow as individuals.
Vernell’s family was the center of his world. He was a beloved father, cherished grandfather and proud great-grandfather. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, but his spirit lives on through the lives he influenced and the community he helped build.
Vernell is survived by his sons: Denoval Grant, Gregory Grant, Michael Grant and Lamont Pearl; daughters: Betestia Shaw and Shekethia Grant; 30 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and loved ones.
