• 2021 Hugo High School Valedictorian: Jake Blankenship is the 18-year-old son of Jaime and Jammie Blankenship. During his high school career, Jake played baseball for four years and football for one year. He also participated in both marching band and jazz band for four years, serving as a section leader and band captain. After graduation, Jake plans to attend the Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology to become a high voltage electrical lineman.

HUGO –– The Choctaw Nation awarded the city of Hugo $30,800, Boswell $11,400 and Choctaw County $25,200 from the Choctaw Community Partner Fund to continue to help strengthen and develop the local area.

HUGO –– The 2021 Lt. Governor’s Turkey Hunt will be held April 21-23 at Hugo Lake State Park.

HUGO — After a slow start, the Hugo Buffaloes put nine points on the board and thought they had a comfortable lead over the visiting Antlers Bearcats until the Cats brought out the bats in the top of the sixth. Antlers hitters found their groove and plated seven runs in the sixth, to take a 10-9 lead over Hugo at Shull-Bywaters Park.

Hugo Buffalo hurler Aden Parish had his stuff working Thursday, as he threw a one-hit shutout against the Tushka Tigers in the Atoka Tournament. With 86 pitches across the plate, Parish fanned six and walked only one batter while his teammates took care of business at the plate.

Fort Towson’s Austin Mcknight had a big day at the plate for the Tigers last week, leading his team to a massive 20-12 win over Achille. Mcknight drove in runs on a single in the second, a single in the third and another blast in the fourth.

BOSWELL — Boswell’s C.J. Jeffries doubled on a 2-0 count in the fifth inning Saturday, driving in two go-ahead runs and the Scorpions never looked back enroute to a big 14-8 win over Tupelo.

ATOKA — The Hugo Buffaloes capped a successful showing in the Atoka Wood Bat Tournament over the weekend going three-out-of-four and finishing the tournament with a solid 11-3 win over Wright City. Ashton Barnett led the Buffaloes in pounding out 14 hits during the game as he had four hits.

In a closely-contested baseball game that saw the lead change hands several times, the Hugo Buffaloes brought out the bats at just the right times in their recent battle against Hartshorn to stroke both hits and home runs to claim the victory, 7-6.

A discovery by a scientist studying brain cancer at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation could be key to improving multiple sclerosis treatment. OMRF scientist Rheal Towner (pictured), Ph.D., is studying potential treatments for a deadly form of brain cancer.
