Audit reports city of Hugo ‘in good financial standing’

HUGO –– After having to reschedule Tuesday’s meeting to Thursday for lack of a quorum, members of the Hugo city council heard from the CPA who conducted the city’s annual audit. According to David Gandall with DWG Auditing, the audit boasted a clean opinion and the city is in good financial standing.

Due process hearing set for teacher accused of abuse

A due process hearing has been scheduled by the Hugo Board of Education for a special education teacher at the middle school accused of child abuse, for March 27. Yolanda Dunbar turned herself into the Choctaw County Jail on Feb. 5 on two complaints of felony child abuse and was released on a $20,000 bond. According to official reports, classroom video shows Dunbar approach a sixth grader who is non-verbal and diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome and grab his ear. It also shows her mimic his behavior, poke the back of his head, grab his arm and hold it down while continuing to poke and tap the back and right side of his head.

VALLIANT — The Lady Buffaloes beat Valliant, 57-42 Friday night in a game that saw contributions from the entire team. Nine of 11 players scored, and everyone got involved on defense, something Coach LaSha Cook said was a goal going into the game.

James Barnett tops National Long Drive Leader Board!

Local golfer James Barnett is making a name and climbing the ranks in the Ultimate Long Drive league. According to ULD vice-president of operations Kevin Porter, Barnett is currently ranked first in the Valor series for the league’s military and first responders. He is currently third in the open men’s division and second in the 35+ men’s division. Barnett finished top eight in his first year in ULD at the World Championship in the 35+ men’s division.
