Happy Easter Sunday, April 20! The Choctaw County Trash-Off will run through April 18. Trash drop off can be found at Boswell County Barn, Nelson Fire Department, Boyd Street in Soper, Speer Fire Department, Bluff Community Center, Grant County Barn, Fort Towson Fire Department, Messer Fire Department, Sawyer Senior Citizens Center, old school house in Spencerville, and the old store on the north side of the Highway in Swink.

Fort Towson Historic Site to host family-friendly spring fling

The Fort Towson Historic Site will host a “Spring Fling” on April 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event will feature a handson map-making activity for kids at 10 a.m., a lecture on Thomas Nuttall at 11 a.m., a picnic on the grounds at noon and a guided nature walk at 1 p.m. Guests should bring a sack lunch and, if participating in the nature walk, expect a slow to moderate pace on uneven terrain. All events are free and open to the public.

FERC dismisses proposed hydroelectric power plant on Kiamichi River

Attorney General Gentner Drummond praised the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) today for dismissing a proposed hydroelectric power plant on the Kiamichi River in Pushmataha County. The Commission halted the plan last month after finding the Southeast Oklahoma Power Corporation’s (SEOPC) Proposed Study Plan (PSP) was insufficient to proceed with planning.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a time for Oklahomans to reflect on the significant impact alcohol misuse has on individuals, families, and communities. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that about one in five Oklahomans aged 12 and older participated in binge alcohol use in the past month and one in 10 are estimated to have had an alcohol use disorder within the past year. Excessive alcohol consumption is a leading cause of preventable deaths, injuries, and illnesses, such as liver disease, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer.
