James “Shorty” Erenst Cogburn, of Oleta, Okla., departed from his earthly journey on Aug. 30, 2023, in Hugo, Okla., at the age of 73. He was born on May 11, 1950 in Lakeview, Ore., the son of Elmer “Preacher” Cogburn and Naoma (Wood) Cogburn. He was preceded in death by his parents. Shorty lived in and around the Sobol area since he was 12 years old. He married Theata (Cooper) Cogburn on April 12, 1974 in Paris, Texas. Shorty was an avid outdoorsman. He worked in the logging industry for many years, owning and operating his own trucks and equipment. Shorty loved to be in the woods, whether it was working, fishing or hunting. Going deer and coon hunting was a passion of his. Shorty also loved spending time out in the barn taking care of his mules. He was a member of The Old Burwell Church of Christ. Shorty will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Shorty is survived by his wife of 49 years, Theata (Cooper) Cogburn of Oleta; son, Casey Cogburn of Oleta; daughter, Valorie Cogburn of Savanna, Okla.; two granddaughters; brother, Kenneth Ray Cogburn and wife of Skedee, Okla.; and sisters: Frankie Searles of Hugo and Carloyn Striby of Hugo; along with a host of nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.

Arrangements are under the direction of Miller & Miller Funeral Home.
