Graveside services for Vashti Jackson, formerly of the Gay Community/Hugo, were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024 at Sweet Hill Cemetery in the Gay Community. Vashti passed away Feb. 2, 2024, at the age of 93.

Vashti was born Feb. 3, 1930. Surviving relatives include: sons: Deral Jackson, Ahmed Rashidi, Terry Jackson, Isom Jackson, Jr., and Ray Jackson; daughters: Gwendolyn Curie, Janet Benford, Linda Oliver, Theresa Jackson and Wanda Jackson.

Services were under the direction of Rogan Funeral Home.

State Auditor is guest speaker at Hugo Rotary Club

HUGO — Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector, Cindy Byrd, was a special guest speaker Tuesday at the Hugo Rotary Club’s weekly meeting. Byrd, a native of Southeast Oklahoma (Coalgate), told the club members she always enjoyed returing to her home and found it a good way to stay “grounded.” “I’m rural,” she told Rotarians, adding that she was the first woman elected to this position as well as the first State Auditor who had personally worked in the department’s trenches, performing all of the types of audits that are routinely done.
