ATV safety urged as summer rides begin

With summer in full swing, thousands of Oklahomans are heading outdoors for work, adventure, and recreation on ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles) and ROVs (Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles). As trail activity increases, safety experts are urging riders to make every ride a safe one –– because wearing a helmet and practicing responsible riding can prevent life-altering injuries and save lives.

Alternatives to guardianship offered by Oklahoma Human Services

Oklahoma Human Services recently debuted a new website — Guardianship and Alternative Options, to equip Oklahoma families, people with disabilities, and professionals in the caregiving field with essential information about caregiving options that promote independence and self-determination. This site was constructed with support from a Bridging Aging and DD Networks grant awarded through the National Association for Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD). The Oklahoma State Alliance Team, which is comprised of many organizations and individuals from across the state, also officered support for this project.

OMRF scientists discover genetic link to Crohn’s disease

A serious digestive disease appears to be connected to lymphatic function, scientists at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation have determined. If confirmed through further research, the discovery by Sathish Srinivasan, Ph.D., and Xin Geng, Ph.D., could eventually lead to a new drug to treat or perhaps even prevent Crohn’s disease.

Flash Flood devastates Texas

KERRVILLE, Texas — A 500-year flash flood in the Texas Hill Country has taken more than 100 lives, many children attending a summer church camp in Kerr County. The National Weather Service categorized the unprecedented rainfall as “the perfect storm,” and said it could have amounted to as much as 16 inches of rainfall in less than one day, sending a wall of water down normally lazy and pristine rivers and streams.
