Today, we are laboring under the notion that we have a whole host of “rights” to stuff which is paid for by other people like the “right” to a free public school education; the “right” to a fair wage, paid vacations, maternity leave, and equal pay for equal work; the “right” to an income for when you are old, unemployed, sick, disabled; a “right” to a “decent” standard of living including “adequate” food, clothing, housing, medical care, and other social services.

5K run steps forward for missing, murdered Native women

ANTLERS –– Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma’s (CNO) Outreach Services Program will host a run and walk to help bring awareness to the issue of violence against Native American women. The 2nd Annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women 5K Run and 1 Mile Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 13 at the Choctaw Community Center, 302 SW O St. in Antlers. Race day registration is available from 6:30 - 7 a.m. at the nearby CNO Wellness Center.

Monarch caterpillars very hungry across Oklahoma

• Late spring, late milkweed, add challenges for iconic species Some very hungry monarch caterpillars may be struggling to find a bite in Oklahoma these days. The big, iconic orange and black butterflies listed under the federal Endangered Species Act as “warranted but precluded at this time by higher priority listing actions” and recently listed as endangered on The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s “red list,” are in a pinch this year in Oklahoma.

Off the tracks...

derailment that occurred Sunday in Hugo has caused traffic delays on the west side of town. Detour signs are in place, but allow extra time for travel. A cause for the derailment has not yet been released but at press time Tuesday, clean up efforts were underway and crews were working hard to get streets clear and tracks repaired.
