HUGO –– Discussion regarding several agenda items led to a lengthy Hugo city council meeting last Tuesday. Employee insurance benefits will continue with medical and dental covered by Blue Cross after a motion by councilwoman Tina Bunn.
Recent Goodland Academy news: On July 14 the Goodland Board of Trustees named Chris Scott as CEO of Goodland Academy effective immediately. The vote was unanimous across the board. Chris’s Interim period was for three months and he has made dramatic improvements on campus. There are more kids on campus to serve and several building renovations are taking place! Chris is in the process of creating more partnerships to fulfill future programs.

As students, teachers, administrative personnel and guidance counselors start the new school year, the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) announces the “Be Kind to Your Mind” campaign.
The National Institutes of Health has awarded an Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientist $3.1 million to investigate a possible cause of heart disease among people with diabetes. Chi Fung Lee, Ph.D., will use the five-year grant to better understand how obesity and diabetes contribute to cardiomyopathy, which is an abnormal weakening of the heart muscle.
Hugo City Manager Leah Savage was recently elected to the OML Board of Directors representing District 3, made up of the following counties in Southeast Oklahoma –– Choctaw, Haskell, Latimer, Leflore, McCurtain, Pittsburg and Pushmataha.
