Calvin Self
Calvin Self, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, left us on July 22, 2025, at the age of 98. Born on Sept. 25, 1926 in Boswell, Okla., Calvin’s life was one characterized by hard work, devotion to family, and a deep-seated generosity that touched the hearts of all who knew him. Growing up in a bustling household amid the fields and farm life in Oklahoma, Calvin learned the value of diligence and family solidarity. He often reminisced about his humble beginnings where some simple hickory nuts and a hammer sufficed for a school lunch. His resilient spirit was forged during these early years, and it remained with him throughout his life.
Calvin proudly served his country during World War II, along with his two older brothers. He was the last to join. Calvin was never told where they were going as the ship tacked slowly back and forth. On route, everything changed –– the war was over. The ship turned around and steered in a straight line for another unknown place. Fortunately, he was stationed in Hawaii, guarding Japanese POWs near Pearl Harbor. Calvin told family he was never allowed to go over to the harbor to see any of the damage. His decision to return home at the close of the war, driven by homesickness and the desire to be with his beloved future wife, Evelyn Moorehead, was a testament to his strong familial bonds. Calvin and Evelyn’s union, which began in matrimony on May 21, 1948 in Oklahoma City, was filled with love, support and mutual respect.
His professional life was characterized by a steadfast commitment, as seen in his career with Sutherland Lumber Company. Calvin’s work led him and his family across various states before he ultimately retired and returned to the family farm in Boswell. There, he and Evelyn relished in the tranquility of the countryside and the joy of a bountiful vegetable garden. He was known far and wide as the “strawberry man.” Calvin’s generosity shone brightly because he would give anyone all the strawberries they could pick.
Even after the loss of his dear wife, Evelyn, in 2009, Calvin continued to be an inspiration of community and kindness. In Kansas City, he found camaraderie and joy at the local Merriam Senior Center. His love for card games and dominoes became a cherished part of his routine, kindling friendships and laughter. Calvin was defined by his kindness, his generous spirit, and his thoughtful nature. His legacy lives on through his loving family: his son, Allyn Self and wife, Linda; his daughterin-law, Brenda Self; his grandchildren: David Self, Jim Self, Greg Self, Devin Self, Tyler Self; step-children: Teresa Finks, Wes Hines and Jay Davis; his great-grandchildren: Daniel Self, Joseph Self, Brandy Self, Sam Self, Paxton Self, Lexi Self and Aaron Finks; as well as his brother, Charles Self and sister-in-law, Brenda. Calvin will join in eternal rest his wife, Evelyn Ruth Moorehead Self; his parents, Elmer Tolbert Self and Della Benton Witt Self; his sisters: Eunice, Emmitt Altie,Wynema, Leola, Lavada, Betty Jo, and Anna Jay; and his brothers: Emmitt “Dick” and Sidney; and his sons: Doyle and Darrel.
As we bid farewell to Calvin, we imagine him reunited with his father Elmer, as they start on an endless series of domino games in a heavenly abode. His life was a collection of memories, experiences, and emotions that shaped his identity and defined what an amazing man he was. Calvin Self will not soon be forgotten. His memory and the imprint he left on our hearts will endure for generations to come.
May the departed soul of Calvin Self rest in peace in Heaven and God give strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.
