Joe Cummings, a cherished soul known for his warm presence and good-natured spirit, has concluded his earthly journey at the age of 85, passing away peacefully on Aug. 31, 2024 in Athens, Texas. Born on July 23, 1939 in Boswell, Okla., Joe’s life was one of simple pleasures and enduring friendships.

Hailing from humble beginnings, Joe spent his formative years in Boswell, surrounded by the love and support of his family. He remained at his family home into his 30s, standing as a pillar of strength and compassion until his parents’ passing. After a brief residence with his stepmother, who later moved to Oklahoma City, Joe’s path led him to Coalgate and Hugo before he eventually settled in the nurturing environment of the Estus House Group home in August of 1998. It was in March of 2001 that Joe came to share a home with his best friend, Bryan Smalle, a companionship that lasted nearly a decade. Toward the latter years of his life, Joe found warmth and care in the homes of Elijah and Tilma, until eventually transitioning to the South Place Nursing Home in Athens, Texas, to be close to his sisters.

The chapters of Joe’s professional life were marked with commitment and pride, particularly during his tenure starting in August 1998 at the Kiamichi Opportunities Sheltered Workshop, where he worked with dedication and joy.

In his leisure, Joe’s heart belonged to the simpler joys in life. He had a fondness for strumming on his guitar and his soul resonated with the harmonies of gospel music. A loyal listener of K95.5, Joe participated energetically, calling in every morning to tackle “the impossible question,” proving himself a frequent victor with the correct answers. A man who valued the company of good friends, he treasured vacations and dining out, indulging in the stories of days gone by. Joe’s youth was filled with the down-to-earth skills of handling a team of mules, plowing, planting a garden, and the joy of horseback riding. Visits to the “old home place” stirred in him fond memories of times spent with his father on the farm. Joe’s personality was affable, easygoing, and he was well-regarded for his camaraderie. Still, he possessed a resolute voice, bold against those whose actions rankled his straightforward values, especially towards those who showed dishonesty or overbearing traits. His convictions were strong, notably his aversion to thieves, liars and bossy characters.

Above all, Joe’s faith shone brightly; he loved Jesus with the entirety of his heart. His love extended to his family and a wide circle of friends who will remember him for his unique sense of humor, his gentle heart, and the strength of his character.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Joe Cummings was held Friday, Sept. 6, 2024 at Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Chapel, with the final interment following at Restland Cemetery in Boswell. Joe’s memory will be treasured perpetually within the stories shared, the music played, and the values he held dear. His legacy will continue to resonate with all who were privileged to know him and warmed by his endearing smile.
