Body

Larry Orville Tyson, known to his grandkids and many, many other kids as “Pops,” from Soper, Okla., was 73 years old when he gained his wings and met Jesus after being injured in a ranching accident (doing what he loves) on Aug. 8, 2020. Known for his big smile, meaningful hugs and unconditional love, Larry was endeared by his family and many friends. He was a man of immense character, integrity, work ethic, patience and commitment to his family.

Shortly after graduation in 1966, Larry honorably served in the United States Army, eventually serving in the Vietnam War. On Aug. 27, 1967, Larry married Betty (Sheets) Tyson at the Church of Christ in Soper. Larry was an avid rancher and cattleman. A true cowboy riding his horse right up until his final days. His favorite hobby was also his “day job” where he loved buying and selling cattle. He had a gift for caring for and doctoring any animal. He could spend hours feeding, checking cattle and pastures, and driving around in his Mule. Larry and Betty shared a combined love for quality time with their family and traveling all over the state and nation watching their grandkids rodeo, play basketball, softball and football, and cheerleading performances. Larry was a dedicated member of First Baptist of Soper and enjoyed working, serving on committees and attending brotherhood meetings. He served on the Soper Cemetery Board for 19 years and Soper School Board for 13 years. He was also a member of the American Legion. If he was not chasing grandkids, riding around in the pasture, working in his shop, or talking on the phone to his family, he could be found at Dairy Queen sharing a Heath blizzard with Betty.

Larry is preceded in death by his father, Marion “Mutt” Tyson and by his mother, Ruby (McKee) Tyson; and brother, Lynn Tyson. He is survived by his wife, Betty of 53 years (today); his two daughters: Tammy and Shely. He was blessed with five grandchildren: Shaelan, Krissy, Kadan, Erika and Tyson Breyer and one great-grandchild, Callen. He was loved and will be greatly missed by siblings: Dorothy and Dewayne; his dearest friend, Fred Carter and wife, Glenda, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, rodeo family, and so many more.
