Max Bryan “Turk” Robinson
Max Bryan “Turk” Robinson, a true embodiment of rugged masculinity and a living Marlboro Man, passed away July 5, 2023, at the age of 91. Turk was born Dec. 8, 1931 to Dudley and Vannie Elizabeth Fennel in Messer, Okla. He married the love of his life, Verna Chappell Robinson in 1969. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Roman Todd. Turk is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Verna, and a host of nieces and nephews who cherished him deeply. A celebration of life was held to honor Turk’s remarkable journey and his unwavering faith in the Lord at 2 p.m. July 11, 2023 at the Hugo Agriplex. Friends and family were invited to attend and join Verna and the rest of the family in celebrating Turk’s life by sharing fond memories and stories that reflect the joy he brought into the world.
Turk’s humble beginnings would ultimately lead him to become an iconic figure in American advertising. Turk’s professional journey as a cowboy and Marlboro Man brought him acclaim and recognition. He won numerous rodeos throughout his career and became a beloved figure in the world of professional rodeo. His larger-than-life persona and rugged charm captivated audiences and left an enduring impression on all who encountered him.
Turk’s legacy extends far beyond his achievements in rodeo and advertising. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, from 1952 through1954. Upon returning home, he began his rodeo and ranching life with Todd Whatley on the T4 ranch east of Hugo. Then in 1972 he began another chapter by choosing to serve our community as a fireman and EMT for the Hugo Fire Department until 1990. Turk was a proud member of the Choctaw Nation. Even after retirement he took great pleasure in his employment as the high stakes poker ambassador at Choctaw Casino in Grant.
Turk loved the Lord very much. He was raised Church of Christ but became a member of the Baptist faith when he met Verna. They were baptized together. He read the Cowboy Bible often. It was a treasured gift to him from Clyde and Elsie Frost. He was a light to many, expressing the true love of his Heavenly Father.
He was a man who definitely lived life to the fullest, demonstrating resilience, determination and the power of carving one’s own path and leaving a lasting impact on everyone he met. As we bid farewell to Turk, our hearts are heavy with grief, yet also brimming with gratitude for having shared a part of his extraordinary journey. Turk’s countless stories are woven into the memories of all who knew him and will continue to live on, bringing warmth and inspiration to our lives. During the Celebration of Life, we will pay tribute to Turk with the help of those who knew and loved him –– the pallbearers, who will carry him on his final journey –– will be: Jim White, Tom White, Cohl Edge, Brandon Ford, Darrin Ford, Wes Muntz, Josh Raper, Charlie Duncan, Ernie Taylor, II, Will Taylor, Ryan Payne, Brent Fortson, Todd Merida and Cass Davis. Their presence symbolizes the deep connection and cherished friendships Turk formed throughout his life. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to the honorary pallbearers: Ernie Taylor, Sr., Otis Knight, Maurice Rogan, Richard Mullins, Mike Ford, Wiley Harrison, Bob Awtry, Dilton Emerson, Trey Strickland, Stan Stamper, Larry Hughes, Jerry Hughes, Morris Williams, Ron Green, Buddy Wall, John Harrison, Sam Davis, Clyde Frost, Charles Baggett, Tuffy Smotherman and Ronnie Raper, who will stand in remembrance and honor of Turk’s legacy.
The service was officiated by Jody House, who lead in commemorating Turk’s remarkable life and guiding us through this time of remembrance and reflection, sharing laughter, tears and cherished memories.
Turk’s beloved wife, Verna and the family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all who attended, offering their support and love during this time of celebration.
In the spirit of Turk’s legacy, let us raise our voices and proclaim, “LONG LIVE COWBOYS,” as we honor his memory and strive to live our lives to the fullest. Farewell, dear Turk. You have left an indelible mark, and your love will forever be cherished.
