CHOCTAW NATION RECENTLY donated more than $3,500 worth of books to Hugo Elementary and Intermediate schools. Every book was written by a Native American author and in addition to providing new reading materials to the schools, these books will also help promote diversity among our students. Toni Pierce appointed to Boswell town council

BOSWELL — Meeting in a special meeting on Tuesday, July 27, the Boswell town council voted to appoint Toni Pierce to fill the council seat recently vacated by councilor Russell Bartlett (resigned). Voting to appoint Pierce to the town council were Mayor Tricia Marshall and councilor Ola Mae Moore.

Hugo PD raids Fifth St. home after drive-by shootings

HUGO — As many as 10 Hugo PD and Choctaw Tribal Police units participated in a raid on a S. Fifth St. residence in Hugo last week. According to Hugo Chief of Police John Mitchell, a warrant to search 607 S. Fifth St. was obtained after a number of shots were reportedly fired into that residence the previous day. Mitchell stated there had been several drive-by shootings in Hugo in the preceeding two weeks, and he said preliminary information indicated the squabbles were over a girl.

Oklahomans can quit tobacco this world lung cancer day

This World Lung Cancer Day, Aug. 1, the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline is urging Oklahomans to quit tobacco using its FREE resources and highlighting the importance of lung cancer screening for early detection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that cigarette smoking is the number one risk factor for lung cancer and is associated with 80% to 90% of lung cancer deaths. Exposure to secondhand smoke can also cause lung cancer.
