State opens COVID-19 vaccine in Phase 3

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) announced that starting March 9, the COVID-19 vaccine will be available to Oklahomans registered in Phase 3 of the state’s vaccine distribution plan: Staff and students in educational settings outside of PreK-12 and critical infrastructure personnel.

Lions Club serving Hugo

Members of the Hugo Lions Club recognized two Students of the Month from the Hugo High School Leo Club - Kayla Loftin and Patrick Hammons (picture includes Mrs. Lori Hicks, HHS Counselor and Mr. Greg Holt, HHS Principal). These students represent the best of an outstanding student organization committed to serving others. The most recent Lions Club project, the Annual Hugo Easter Egg Hunt, has turned into a partnership with many others who are joining in the effort to help the children of Hugo have a great Easter. These include Pepsi, Hugo Public Schools, the HHS Leo Club, the Hugo Area Chamber of Commerce, Hugo Rotary Club, the HMS Interact Club, Little Dixie Community Action Agency, and the HHS Baseball Team. This event will be held at Ansley Park at 3 p.m. on Easter Sunday. Admission is free for the two age groups - kindergarten and under and first through fifth grade. The Easter Bunny will be there.

City of Hugo receives improved ISO rating

HUGO — Residents in Hugo could experience a decrease in property insurance premiums after the Hugo Fire Department upgrade to an ISO of 2. According to Hugo Mayor Richard Higginbotham, the city was recently informed of its ISO upgrade from a 4 to a 2.

Friday last day to register for April 6 election

Friday, March 12, is the last day to apply for voter registration in order to be eligible to vote in the April 6 school board, municipal and special Choctaw County commissioner election. Persons who are United States Citizens, residents of Oklahoma, and at least 17.5 old are eligible to apply for voter registration, however, you must be at least 18 years old to vote.

Choctaw Nation announces opening of new laundry facility

HUGO — The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma has announced a new business opening in Hugo this month, a laundry facility. The new laundry facility, located at what was previously the Pepsi plant, will service all laundry from the expanded Durant Resort, and Pocola and Grant hotels.

Gross hired as new head football coach

HUGO — The Hugo board of education selected Krystopher Gross as the new head football coach during the regular meeting held Monday. Gross, who came to Hugo from Broken Bow Schools after 2018, has acquired many years coaching school athletics since graduating from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
