Special election necessary for council position

HUGO –– A special election will be held to determine who will fill the open At-Large position on the Hugo City Council. Four names were suggested during last Tuesday’s meeting in hopes of filling the position –– John Wyrick, Chris Cannon, Tim Lemmons and Katrina Bills –– but an agreement couldn’t be reached.

EOSC Meat Judging team wins Beef Empire Days contest

WILBURTON –– The Eastern Oklahoma State College meat judging team earned top honors at the Beef Empire Days contest, held at Tyson Fresh Meats in Holcomb, Kan., and Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kan. Eastern claimed the first place overall team award to begin the fall season on a strong note.

This year’s theme is “Voices of the Land, Strength of the People: Indigenous Women Shaping Community & Missing, Murdered Indigenous Women — Chahta’s fourth annual Woman’s Conference will host a one-day, in-person gathering with engaging speakers, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities for victims of abuse and workers in domestic violence prevention.

The Choctaw County Republicans will have their next meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Choctaw County Library. Derek Porter, a Republican running for Oklahoma House District 19 will be speaking. Anyone planning to assist in the Voter Drive to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20 at the Hugo Housing Authority is asked to reach out to Colby Bryant or Doug McClure.
