Youth Leadership deadline approaching

Leadership Oklahoma, a statewide leadership program, is now accepting applications for its 2021 Youth Leadership Oklahoma (YLOK) class. Applications are accepted on line and can be accessed through the Leadership Oklahoma website or by using this link: https://smr.to/p68968. The deadline to submit applications is Friday, Jan. 15, 2021. Applications must be submitted online by that date. Applicants must be high school juniors or homeschooled equivalent with at least a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Hugo School board renews Supt. contract

The Hugo board of education met in regular session on Dec. 14. Our annual financial audit was reported by Bledsoe, Hewett, and Gullekson. The board approved fundraiser requests for HMS and HHS as well as the opening of a new activity account for the HMS Computer Lab. Leah Brown was employed to work as a custodian at HMS and the board accepted the resignations of Jan Hunter and Ruby Nored. After an executive session to discuss the matter, the board renewed my contract. Encumbrance, Payroll, and Minutes Clerk, Shelly Wilson, was selected as the Support Employee of the Month. Shelly is a godsend who has helped us keep the district running smoothly for many years. Our December payroll will include employee bonuses for unused sick and personal leave from last year.

SAWYER — The police department in Sawyer, Okla., has a new four-legged friend that will help sniff out crime. Bevo the almost two-year old Dutch Shepherd and the son of Rattan Police Department’s K9 Vader, began training with officer Ian Wilkinson to help on his patrol.

Additional statewide COVID-19 mitigation efforts announced

A much better weather pattern starts for Choctaw County on Wednesday as the winter storms that have been affecting the state of Oklahoma move out and a big warming trend is coming our way for the remainder of the week. We will be in the 50s by Thursday and above 60 degrees by Sunday and Monday. The storm on Sunday brought five inches to Tulsa and that was their heaviest snow in seven years.

The Iris Garden Club of Hugo met on Nov. 23, 2020 in the home of Sammy Thacker. The home was beautifully decorated for fall. As guests arrived, they encountered lovely decorations on the porch, in the home and lots of pumpkins.
