She was born to Lloyd and Ollie Bea Hawkins on Oct. 18, 1941 in Hugo, Okla. She grew up in Apple, Okla., on the family farm with four other siblings: Jimmy, Martha Jo, Lowell (Shorty) and Billy (Bruce).

DURANT –– The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) was recognized by the Oklahoma Blood Institute on Tuesday, March 9, for outstanding service to communities across southeast Oklahoma. Chief Gary Batton said he was recently on a phone call with Harvard University Alumni Associations and people from 20 other nations when the story came up about how the Choctaw Nation came to the aid of Ireland during its famine in the 1800s.
