WILBURTON –– Eastern Oklahoma State College is expanding its academic offerings with the launch of a new associate degree in Native American Studies, beginning in the upcoming academic year. The new program will provide students with the opportunity to explore the histories, cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples of the Americas through a multidisciplinary approach.

Funeral services for Jeffrey Chumley, of Hugo, Okla., were held at 10 a.m. Aug.

Gwenda Lynn English, age 77, passed away on Aug. 2, 2025 in Paris, Texas. She was born on Feb. 23, 1948 in the Chicota community of Paris, Texas, to Thomas Edward Davidson and Lucille Maxine Lewellen.

Warner Virgil Fowler passed away on Aug. 9, 2025, at the age of 89.

Jimmie Thomas (Mrs. Jimmie), 92, of Grant, Okla., passed away peacefully Aug. 6, 2025. Born May 25, 1933 in Gay, Oklahoma., she was the daughter of James and Addie Babb and one of 11 siblings. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, she later earned an Associate’s Degree in early childhood education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. A lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church, she served many roles including Mission President, Sunday School teacher, choir president and service announcer. She retired from Head Start and later worked as a cook at Grant Schools, where she was loved for her home-cooked meals and as a loyal basketball fan.

The third annual Back to School Prayer Meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 9, 2025 at the Hugo Elementary Gym. The community will meet and pray for the children, the teachers and the many who will come into contact with each other throughout the school year.
