November is National Family Caregivers Month. There are more than 11 million family caregivers in the U.S and nearly half of these caregivers provide help to someone with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Here in Oklahoma, there are 135,000 caregivers who provided 164 million hours of unpaid care valued at more than $2.6 billion.
The National Institutes of Health has awarded an Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientist $2.9 million to investigate how glycans, a special type of sugar group, can perform many essential functions in the gut.

Hugo Elementary School announces it has received a $3,750 Classroom Enhancement grant from the Carolyn Watson Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation administered by the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. The grant will be used to assist in funding Science Around the Room, which will allow Hugo Elementary School to provide educational opportunities that will expand its students’ horizons.

The Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline, a program of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET), is launching a statewide campaign highlighting the link between smoking and Type 2 diabetes. In Oklahoma, diabetes is one of the ten leading causes of death, affecting nearly half a million residents (14%) — and more than one million Oklahomans are affected by prediabetes.
